Guinea rabbits

Eek! I go away on business and when I phone home my wife tells me she's acquired two guinea piggs which were going 'free to a good home'. I questioned whether this was wise, what with us having a fox set at the bottom of the garden...but apparently they're indoor guinea pigs.

Poppa's got a brand new blog

Yeah, sorry - another one. Everyone seems to be doing them nowadays.

But this one serves a purpose. I'm trying to get a couple of people interested in poetry against their will. My idea is to post a few poems I know (and some I don't), and then we can talk about what's inside them.

(I'm no expert - but it seemed like a good idea. It will be as much a learning experience for me as for anyone).

So...if you fancy joining in discussions or want to suggest a suitable poem:

Who died and left me in charge?

Apparently the post has arrived at home, and I got a letter I've been waiting for.

I've been appointed as a member of The Children's Panels in Glasgow. Basically, this is the equivalent of a magistrate for children (sort of). Under the Scottish system, decisions on custody, placing in care, supervison, parental access etc. are taken outwith the court system and made ina more child-centred environment where discussion of the options is possible. The decisions are made by a three member lay panel who take advice from various concerned parties.

It's a scarily big thing. Once I've been trained, over the next couple of months, I'll be involved in decisions that affect peoples' lives. My only real qualification is that I'll probably be better than some other eejit.

I've also got a nice certificate from the police saying that they've never heard of me...which somehow seems like an admission of failure on my part. (And theirs smiley - winkeye)

Farewell Kurt Vonnegut

Kurt Vonnegut is dead. It's what he always wanted.
