Scot in Belgium

Hi, my name's Neil Mackay and I lived in Edinburgh, Scotland for the first 31 years of my life apart from holidays so I had never been outside Scotland for more than 2 weeks.

A glass of beer on a beermat On 14th August 2004 I moved to Belgium and I studied flemish/dutch language and culture at Antwerp uni for a year. I am currently doing a degree in Secondary school teaching in a beautiful town called Sint Niklaas which is also where I live. It's known for it's Grote Markt/Grand Place/Market Square - the biggest in Belgium. The square was rennovated last year and a carpark was built underneath. At the reopening in May/April they built the world's largest ever chocolate egg from Guylian bars (They're the Belgian chocolates that look like shells). It's an official Guiness world record!

As well as travel and finding out about different cultures I'm really interested in languages, linguistics and my family history, especially the highland clearances so these or some of my other interests might make their way onto these pages. I also play the guitar and love films and music and the ways that these genres are combined.

It's also a great place for me to chat in English for a change...
