I am a middle-aged medical researcher who has lived in a tropical developing country for the past 10 years. After 10 years of rather slow progress on eliminating or controlling the interesting parasitic diseases here, I've fallen into an intellectual rut. So, I've recently taken to reading and learning about things totally outside my field: Quantum Mechanics, Relativity, Neuroscience, Economics, Appropriate Technology, Sustainable Development, Climate Change, History, Philosophy, Theology, Psychology and drug-induced mystical experiences. All this aimed at jump-starting my fossilizing brain so I can answer the question, "Why did I think I could change things for the better here?".
Surprisingly enough, I couldn't find anyone in my small tropical sea-side town who could answer some of my questions about Particle Physics and Relativity. In fact, everyone here is too busy drinking beers, tending to the barbeque or going in for a swim as we lounge on the beach, such that I only get blank stares when I ask, "How do you think the Higgs Field would operate if we live in 5 dimensional de Sitter space-time?". People here act as if I'm crazy when I tell them about my ideas for sending coconuts fifty years forward in time so we can sell them at a much higher price and then using the profits to develop the local economy now so everyone will be much happier and we'll still have enough money left over to finally solve those nagging parasitic disease problems.
Well, I think with that background it's perfectly clear how I ended up finding H2G2. The result of this happy convergence will be history soon enough. And that, dear reader, is my grand goal: to finally establish the field of Historical Engineering.
In case you haven't noticed yet, I really don't know any answers at all to Life, the Universe & Everything. But I'm pretty good at pointing out good questions for us all to ask. For example, "Have I wasted enough time reading this Bozo's introduction?"
