Hmmmm.
Maybe the squirrels noticed them because of the altitude.

I got the idea from Living With The Land at EPCOT.

These squirrels ate the meat ... they started nibbling at the openings in the jack-o-lantern until the front was a giant hole ...

Yeah, I recall the squirrels last year nibbling away at the pumpkins I had bought for decoration.

I had one pumpkin I left outside mid-November and noting touched it. It didn't even roat until late spring when I threw it deep into the woods.

I like to keep un-cut pumpkins as decoration until Thanksgiving is over, but I've found that with the constant frosts/freezes from late October until I was ready to change to Christmas decorations, they'd start to rot. Keeping them indoors doesn't help because they get too hot in the house. The idea of keeping them that long was to hopefully be able to use them to make pumpkin pies, but once they started to rot , the only thing to do with them was to toss them out. What a waste.
This year, the local craft store had two very realistic looking full-sized artificial pumpkin styles available, and they'd already been marked down when I was there the other day, so I bought one of each. They ended up costing not much more than I'd have spent on real ones, but I should be able to use them for several years. It may confuse the squirrels to see pumpkins that aren't edible, but at least I won't be tossing them out at the end of the season this time!

I just happened to be in the right place at the right time - they had lots of them left, and they'd just gone on sale that day.

Every year I see gargantuan pumpkins that
have been raised for size alone. They aren't
edible, which seems a waste. At least when
I try to grow large pumpkins, they are species
that could be eatenb, if not by people then
by farm animals.

Here, they can't feed the pumpkins to the farm animals for, like the pumpkins, the animals are raised IN THE NAME OF SCIENCE!!!
