Iolanthe was a pun on Island Tree, Mr. C.

I heard of a Noo Yawk Gilbert and Sullivan company that put on
"Iolanthe" once. The way they pronounced the title character's name
was a hoot!

I'm not quite getting it.

Um, "Iolanthe" was a G&S operetta about a man who was part man, and part fairy. The fairies were patterned after the peers in the House of Lords.

But never mind. It wasa bit of a stretch, as puns go.
