Oh, I see what you meant now. smiley - smiley Thanks. For some reason I just couldn't get that bit to make sense...

My languistics prove quite poor a lot of times. Simple ideas or expressions on this sitee get blown all out of proportion and then it all goes down-hill from there.

But I'm sure I got some mule genes in me, I don't give up trying. smiley - smiley

Oh, I don't think your writing was at fault here - for some reason I just failed to understand that bit.
As for people taking things out of proportion... yeah, that always happens. In recent years, I often found myself (not just here, but everywhere on the internet) getting upset at an online-argyument, hitting the 'reply' button, writing a long message, and then just closing that tab. Doesn't exactly get it out of your system, but it's a lot better than actually posting it and getting entangled in the usual mess. I wish more people did that.

Hey, did you steal my idea then? Any number of times, I open another tab with the 'reply' window to something that I see which is soooo wrong. Write a very clear rebuttal, ...

And then leave that tab open for a time. Eventually I just hit the X for the tab and it's all gone the way of the wind and no one the wiser. It's a lot safer than speaking my mind around here most days. smiley - winkeye

I actually don't remember ever doing that over here (although I can think of a few times when I wish I had... *sigh*), but on other internet arguments, yes. It's quite a relief to let it go, isn't it?

And when something is put directly in front of you, see it and then walk away ... Not always the easiest but often for the best.

Well, the new place is nice. smiley - smiley Just like the old place. Which is all I wanted, really.

Back to that old conversation... 'not always the easiest' is an understatement. I sometimes find myself arguing in my head with comments that annoyed me, even when I not only know that I'm not going to bother answering them, but I also _can't_ (because they're on a site I'm not registered to, for example). It's ridiculous, how much such things can get to you.

I find myself devising the most eloquent and fool-proof responses to some things as I drift off to sleep. Much safer than having a keyboard at-hand. smiley - winkeye

Yes, it is nice that the site is essentially what we've all known for a long time. And so as adverts arrive, subtle or bigger changes, they can each be met and adapted to as we roll along.

Adverts, eh? That's kind of an obvious solution for income for a private site, but almost an odd concept to consider in this place. Still, I'm sure the New Powers That Be will know how to incorporate them in a good way.

As I understand things, some from the blizzard of threads and announcements that were ALL OVER for months, then from the more organized ones later ...

Donations and ways and means of supporting the place will be offered. (I tucked a little currency in many months ago) The better they might do with sales of towels, books of "Best Entries and such" books, people passing through with PayPal, perhaps the less adverts might be needed. But the whole affair is being mechanically carried by a commercial enterprise (Noesis) and their coffers need to be lined.

Yeah, I don't actually have much of a problem with using adverts - unless they're of the absolutely obnoxious sort (which I'm sure the Powers That Be would know to avoid) they are already pretty much a part of the internet landscape...
In fact, if they end up finding something like Project Wonderful (a system that is used by a bunch of webcomics that I read - you can look it up if you want to, I wouldn't be able to explain it very well) they might end up with some ads people will actually want to click. I think the PW ads are the only ones I ever clicked intentionally - since the advertisers had things I was actually interested in.

Having a quiet evening ahead, I may remember to look up PW ...

On the Noesis forums, the ads were there and obvious but not the big, pop-up-in-your-face sort. So on the whole, some folks will gripe and moan and then life will move on. Of course, the obvious solution to ads is for people to volunteer monies on a fairly regular basis. I don't see that happening much though. smiley - winkeye I tossed in a fair measure at the outset, but it really isn't something that I can manage to do monthly

Yeah, I bought a Gargleblaster t-shirt, and will be happy to buy some more if they make some of Tavaron's designs I liked - and if they offered a subscription system, I would be happy to join - but they definitely need a more stable business model, and adverts seem to be a good way to do it.

I gather that Ben has been working herself silly on business models and other such 'plans' for much of the year. As it is presently structured, the 'high' people, I have doubts if it will last beyond a year. But in the meantime, if a subscription idea comes along, something modest enough, I too would contribute that way. I really don't have much want or need of related merchandise ...

Well, I don't really have a need for any, either, but h2g2 has been a bog enough part of my life that I wouldn't mind flaunting a bunch of swag. smiley - smiley
But business models are really not my thing - I have a terrible head for business - so I'm just going to trust that it's all in good hands...

"Business Planning" became an important process in our military some years ago. And about then is when I lost most liking and respect for it, our military. I do not understand all of that stuff that only seems to serve to create working lives for some and confuse everyone else

Indeed, the primary h2 folks that stepped up and created their whole bid process, I have a world of respect for their efforts and dedication. It's not the sort of stuff that I could ever do. I offered to help with some of the volunteer positions, but I am not allowed to

One sentence that I didn't put into your journal ...

"I was gonna suggest the smell of sizzling bacon, but I expect that would be a bit more than wrong in these conditions ..."

But it's definitely an aroma that would gain a response from me. smiley - winkeye

smiley - laugh

Well, to each his own; personally, I'm not a big fan of bacon, but I suppose not having grown up with it (it's hardly a staple in this part of the world, as you might imagine...) is part of the reason. I don't _dislike_ it, and agree it can be a nice addition in some contexts, but I don't go drooking over it as many others seem to, and it would definitely not be my first choice of breakfast.

As for my cousin, he's been a vegetarian and a carnivore and things in-between in different times in his life, and I can't remember what his recent point of view on this has been. smiley - erm

I don't know how well it works there, but the aroma of popcorn is really a tough one to not react to. Most love it, a few despise it. But I have never met a person (except one baker) who wasn't affected by the aroma of warm, fresh-baked bread products. That is drool-worthy!

As long as each step of progress is forward, then it's all good. smiley - smiley

Ooh, yes, baking tends to spread the most wonderful smells. One of the reasons I enjoy it so much.

At some point last week, talking with Dan, I informed him that my house smelled like cookies (since I was making cookies not long before), and he wondered whether among all the many many scented candles out there, someone might have thought of making one that smells like cookies.
...Of course someone has. http://www.sierramtncandles.com/chocolate-chip-cookies-scented-candle-p-61.html
(It's hardly the only one, too)
