I should explain - I do have a TV here, but it tends to play two channels at once. Plus until I get mey head around what's happening I can't make sense of what's in the paper (plus I'm only buying the paper on a Saturday).

Oo, yes, the group stages started last Friday. I've barely moved

That's not terribly easy to follow, I'm afraid. They do assume a certain amount of familiarity, don't they?

>>And none of the players can be bigger than a shrew<<
Does that mean I can bring the stoats in?
(not entirely sure how big a shrew is).
tickle
Trin Tragula Posted Jun 13, 2006
Stoats! I think they'd be a bit ... physical.
(The opening game was between flants and snails ... that's about the average. A shrew might be mistaken for a mouse but only if he tucked his nose in and ate well).

So how do I find out who's played and who's still left?

Skinks! Plenty of pace up front, but prone to defensive errors due to falling asleep while basking
I'll see if I can't find a better results thing

OK, I just found the results page on the bbc.
Dunce questions :
Why do they have two scores? eg Australia 3 - 1 (0 - 1) Japan
On my chart thingy I've got these boxes to fill in:
P W D L PTS
Presumably that's Played, Win, Draw, Lost, Points?
How do the points work?

The German Embassy, no less - it's a pdf (hope that's not a problem), but it's got all the fixtures and all the results so far (you don't even have to fill it in yourself ... not that I've been doing that, because that's very geeky
)

The score in brackets was the score at half-time (in the case of that particular match, that's what I meant by 'mugging')
Points - you get three points for a win and one for a draw.

Mine's a very discreet little booklet I got free with The Guardian
It's starting again! (Honestly, it's really taxing trying to watch *all* of it ).
Go Togo!

Upsurge in interest in the Antipodes after yesterday?
(Not that I'm suggesting the Australian mugging of Japan will have been celebrated down your way exactly ...)

Hard to say. A general rule of thumb is that anyone beating the ozzies is something to get excited about . But the Listener's "Rugby Fan's Guide to the World Cup" had the Australian team listed under local favourites *shrug* although they did describe their sick list as a plane crash

That's been my sole source of useful info other than you

Togo, eh? What's wrong with Korea?
Are you at work?
tickle
Trin Tragula Posted Jun 13, 2006
Korea are pretty affluent and have done quite well at World Cups previously. Togo's players haven't been paid yet, they're at a World Cup for the first time and they're really here on a wing and a prayer.
Supporting the underdog, basically
... and they just scored!
(I'm sort of working - exam marking's largely done, but I've got things to tidy up. It's tricky though: every time I think 'must get something done' ... Togo go and score )

Bummer about Togo. I did like their post-score dance though.

Trin Tragula Posted Jun 14, 2006
Yes, that was good
And if France - and Switzerland, for that matter - stay as dire as they were yesterday, you never know, Togo might surprise them.
They probably won't though
*checks wallchart*
Go Ukraine!

I don't even know where Togo is (well I know the continent)
That reminds me, I saw you asking a question (perhaps in PR) and then saying that you could go look up the answer yourself. Which you did. Setting a bit of a dangerous precedent there, don't you think?
Ok, Ukraine then
tickle
Trin Tragula Posted Jun 14, 2006
(Ukraine are pretty good - they were last time I saw them, anyway).
*Recallstrain* Was that the liger/tion thing? Well, I just amazed myself with my own laziness and had to do something to atone
Key: Complain about this post
