Well I guess your right, Hypatia. My uncle, who was stationed in Germany(when he was in the army) said that the traffic laws are different but not really strict. Is that true?

Hypatia Posted Sep 29, 2010
I'm afraid I don't know anything about traffic laws in other countries. It would be fun to find out.
Speaking of water, one of the things I'd love to do is take some river cruises through Europe.

Oh, they are strict with traffic laws here. It makes them rich if they catch you breaking them, so they're very watchful.

depends on the time of year. if you are here around midsummer i suggest we meet in tromsö/norway, where they enjoy the midnight sun a few weeks before and after midsummer's day. southern europe is too hot then anyway

That question has already been asked before, jzzyprin93. I'll see if I can find the thread.

Has anyone ever try to drive from London to Paris?

No, I haven't. I think there is a direct train connection which is relatively fast.

From what I've heard, driving in Paris might be best avoided, anyway. Coming from the US you'd be driving on the right side of the road for Paris, though. Well, you'd think.

No, we usually drive from Germany via Belgium to another part of the UK.

i took the train from london to paris last summer. nice trip, but terrible service on the way. had to ask for my food and twice while everybody else around me got their food immediately
other than that a pretty uneventful ride

Here you are, jzzyprin - the ideas that H2G2 suggested for a trip to Europe by a single American traveller.

Travelling alone really is the ideal thing to do, as you meet people on the way. If you are with someone, you have far less contact with others, depending, of course, on what sort of a person you are.
My son backpacked across Canada on his own and met loads of interesting people. I unfortunately, never went anywhere on my own, but there's still time .... apparently it is now a trend for women over 50 to go places on their own - and not organised packages or tours either!
As I have no idea whether you are a young man of 20 or a widow of 60 or whatever in between, it might be difficult to customise a tour at the moment. If you're short of money, there are plenty of h2g2 researchers in Europe with spare beds.
