Always the books of the lord of the rings over the films. Plus, for extra depth of knowledge, read the silmarilion.
RPG GAMES
For those who just love the thrill of role-playing choose one of my favourites either the baldur's gate series or go for Final Fantasty. Another good one is Metal Gear Solid but not as good as the first two and not really of the same genre.
RANDOM STUFF
Yup, random stuff is great. Almost as good as random philosphy such as 'Cone theory' and 'Are rights really inate?'
