I unplugged the puter speakers to hook up the headset. Is there a better way to do it so I can have both? Does it give a visual cue so you know you're being called?

The way I tried to explain it to Az was:
leave the speakers plugged in. Figure out which plug on the headset is for the microphone. Plug that one into the microphone hole. leave the other plug dangling.
That way you'll hear the sound from the speakers rather than from the earphones of the headset. If you want to have both computer speakers and headset speakers you'll probably have to go down to the electronics store in the mall and spend a couple of bucks on a splitter jack.
And yes, a little window pops up when someone calls.

That makes perfect sense to me, anhanga. I think the mic plug is pink. Thank you!
By the way--since your photo is a cartoon, I imagine you sounding like the adults in the Peanuts shows--- mwa mwa mwa mwa.

On my computer, I have my headset with mic plugged in and can still hear it ring. It comes through the built-in speaker (the one that channels "Windows" sounds like errors). That is the feature I mentioned when I said to click the "Ring PC speaker" box in the Options.
I don't have my outside speakers turned on at all but I can hear the ring sound when I don't have my headphones on.

'My uni's free ethernet is so damned restrictive. I'm trying to get skype, but it won't let me. Something about a license it doesn't have.'
They may not like article 4.1 of the skype enduser agreement:
"Permission to utilize Your computer. In order to receive the benefits provided by the Skype Software, you hereby grant permission for the Skype Software to utilize the processor and bandwidth of Your computer for the limited purpose of facilitating the communication between You and other Skype Software users."

WOW!! I love that map thing (I'm on it now). I love that you can export to google earth too (my favourite time wasting toy at the moment)

What is 'export to google earth'? I clicked on it and it said I had to download something, so I didn't.
But I did download SAM. Now I just have to figure out how to leave a voice answering message. If I don't put one myself is there a standard answering message?

Google earth is brilliant. It is the earth mapped from satellite pics! You can zoom right into cities all around the world and see streets and famous places. You can download a free light version but I have the full pro version. It is a fascinating toy. Some places are really well photographed - you can make out cars and buses on Regent St in London for example. You can see what the gardens at Buckingham Palace look like! Funny enough though - they seem to have pixelated the White House in Washington DC.
Download it and have hours of fun (ie waste more time in front of the puter)

The Google Eath is frighteningly addictive.
That was where I got the satellite photo of Seville that I sent you. I have also been posting on the bulletin board there. It is great because people can send you an image and you doubleclick on it and it takes you there in Google Eath. You can save images and send them to someone and they can see what you see. You can save and choose the view any combination of your saved "places" at any time.

That was, of course, Google Earth... not Eath

I don't know that it's about the use of bandwidth as it is that my uni is so beholden to corporate interests. I mean, they damned near banned iTunes because some record companies were complaining.

My Uni blocks all kinds of things, too, mainly because they'Re afraid of right-wing sites.

I downloaded a couple of voicemail thingies before I found one I could record my own message or add a .wav file for my message. All the others caused a windows fault.
