Happy to report that anhaga has helped me solve the microphone/headset dilemma. I finally found my headset but then couldn't hear my speakers if both thingys were plugged in. So now, thanks to anhaga, I put on the headset but still listen through my speakers, and apparently others can hear me better through the headset mike.

Off to check out the free answering machine service.

My uni's free ethernet is so damned restrictive. I'm trying to get skype, but it won't let me. Something about a license it doesn't have.

Stupid computer-illiterate apples spoiling it for the rest of us, I tell you!

I just (painlessly) inmstalled Skype, am BrittaMoG if anyone wants to contact me later. Must slap another coat of paint on my easels first, then off to buy a headset. Wooooohooooo!
Must admit I'm not generally in the habit of conducting long phone conversations, but I'd love to hear your voices!

Well, I think in spite of the fact that Mudhooks and I chatted for 34 whole minutes yesterday and she and zoomer also had a lengthy chat, I don't think this would be the norm.

I used to talk on the phone a LOT when I lived in Toronto, but these days I find I just can't do that anymore.

But a quick call-up from a friend (and on Skype we can post if we are 'available' or not) to say hello seems quite a nice way to have a chat and hear someone's voice. Not unlike the h2g2 friends photo gallery has allowed us to put a face to the name (well, except for anhaga) but also putting a voice to the name could be quite interesting.

Perhaps those that request it could have you add their Skype nickname to their photo. Let me be the first to have mine added....

Good idea! I'll try to get the whole skype thing working back home, but I'm not much of a phoner, either. I'm a bit scared of making phone calls, actually, dunno why!

If you don't want to sit around wearing your headphones in case someone calls, you can set it up to ring on your computer's speaker as well as your headphones.

If you go to Tools/Options/Sound Devices and then select Ring PC Speaker.

You can also change what events cause which sounds, as well as turn on/off alerts when Contacts come on line, etc. (Those are in "Sound Alerts")
