[There's no way to know how clever other life-forms in the universe might be. It's conceivable that a planet near Betelgeuse was once habitable, and figured out some defenses when the star became lethal. Or, Ford Prefect is a pathological liar who really was from earth, but liked to claim Betelgeusian connections so he could impress clueless peopole like Arthur Dent]
