I remember when she was on the old Porter Waggoner Show. He was a nothing andn people only watched the show because of her. Then when she made it big he tried to get a huge part of her income. I don't think it worked. Anyway, who even remembers him any more? Only old foggies like me.

Porter reminds me of someone I know............oh, maybe your mayor, Hyp?

I certainly remember Porter Waggoner, you forget I spent a lot of my younger years in a northern Manitoba mining town. Almost all we ever got on the radio was C&W. I used to hate it as a child cos - of course - I wanted to be listening to the Beatles, the Stones, The Who, Herman's Hermits, etc. Even the Monkees! (give me a break, I was only 9).
Later on I discovered the amazing world of country music and found I knew almost everybody already. Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, George Jones (well, kinda ick), Chet Atkins, Larry Adler, Flatt and Scruggs, etc etc...

Remember how Porter always sang those story songs or whatever they're called? And he always recited part of them instead of singing? That was so lame. And that pompadour and those sequined clothes. He wanted to be Elvis sooooooooo bab. Trouble was, Elvis had talent and Porter was mediocre.

What, you mean ballads, Hypatia? We get 'em over here in Scotland, too. Annoying as anything and terribly embarrassing to listen to. *Laugh*

Not sure if this will come out - a You Tube video of Porter intruducing Dolly singing THAT SONG. I had to let it go through once and play it again to get it without buffer breaks.

Totally puts Whitney's screaming version of this very beautiful song to shame, dunnit?

Whitney put herself to shame. Whoever told her she could sing, should be shot.

Ah, Whitney can sing, and sing amazingly well, just that she kind of 'overdid it' with this very simple love song, kinda showing off.
Dolly did it way better and with more heart - after all, it was her song.
Earl Scruggs where, Jack?

I couldn't get it to play, but I've heard it by Dolly and it's much prettier and has more feeling than Whitney's version. When Dolly sings it, you believe she means it. Patsy who?

Az, Whitney has a wonderful musical voice, but she's tone-deaf. I cringe whenever she tries to peg the high notes. She gets kinda close, but 'kinda close' is not good enough for my ears.

az, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I just am not a Patsy fan. I could have phrased it more delicately.

No worries, I wasn't upset at all by you, Lady C - was mostly weeping for anyone who didn't appreciate the the total beauty of Patsy Cline's music, and especially for those who don't even know who she is(was).

Mr Tiger by the Tail? Well, I shall bow to your obvious greater knowledge - but didn't they look almost the same?
