People who say "I left a message"
Posted Jun 17, 2002
Today I have been informed by two people, regarding two entirely different subjects, that they had called my phone and "left a message". One of them went so far as to say "I called your work, home and mobile and left a voice message on all three". If you’re reading this, and you know which "you" I am referring to: No you did not. You lie.
Rather than force me into the detective work of testing all three answering services and listening to the messages from other people - who were courteous enough the call and leave a message - to ensure that everything is in order, I would prefer to be told "I could be bothered to phone you, it wasn’t very important to me so I thought I would make out that I had done what I was going to do and call you but I forgot." or the simple: "Couldn't be arsed" would suffice.
(and record for longest use of the English language without apparent need for punctuation goes to...)
Arrghhh....

The Salmon of Doubt
Posted May 25, 2002
This morning I finished reading The Salmon of Doubt.
It was a veritable roller-coaster of a ride and quite possibly the most moving book I have ever read. I do mean this. I'm not a blurb writer trying to sell you this book, I'm sure you've already read it and understand what I mean.
I was in the middle of reading the Dirk Gently - Salmon of Doubt when it stopped and I was introduced to the transcript of an interview with Newsweek. As the anger died, having been ripped from the surreal conversation about transporting rhinos, I realised what the time frame was on this interview, DNA being 49 and in Santa Fe. I read on, wanting to tell him to skip the gym, take some asprin and see a GP knowing that I had all the persuasive ability of someone screaming answers at a television ameshow. The transcript ended with talk of his wife and daughter.
The book continued with Richard Dawkins lament. It carried with it the gravity that I had not realised from the comments made by Cerf and Fry.
I am in the process of re-reading TSOD and plan on re-devouring DNAs other great works in the very, very near future.

Colouring in
Posted May 24, 2002
Today, like many days, I did some colouring in. Now for a 21 year old you may think that this is far, far beneath me. Let me assure you. When you are getting paid for it it makes it all the more worthwhile. I don't have to keep within the lines, AutoCAD does it for me (Thankyou AutoDesk)! I don't have to endure the artistic strains of creation. I just have to draw a line around a room, type in the word AREA make a note of the output and then click the hatch button. I have a choice of 255 colours - no lost blue felt tip any more!
