Yeah, honey fungus is definitely what those orange 'shrooms looked like!
Glad I didn't eat them.
Magic mushrooms... haven't had one of *those* in over 10 years. We used to put them on pizza.

The line I loved from the Grauniad story was:
'Have you ever seen cats with hash? Cats always go for hash.'

The crack squirrels cracked me up. I've never seen any of those, but I'll keep an eye out when and if I wind up in one of the more unsavory neighborhoods.
Had a heck of a busy day yesterday, running around all over the city on various errands. Spent Saturday night by our friends' home so we could let the dogs out. Got wood screws to hang a wall hanging with (and the first screw went all the way in to the drywall- we'll need someone with a bit more expertise to help avoid wrecking the wall, I think), got a new plant for me, an orange door mat with a jack-o-lantern face on it, got me a fancy bread knife, and last but not least, dropped by the Planet of Sound and found the following: "Destination Bomp" compilation CD, "Thai Beats vol. 3" CD, Toots & the Maytals double CD "Funky Kingston/In the Dark", a double CD by Necros, and a $5 DVD of "White Zombie". All in all, a productive day, and we only used half of the dog-sitting money, so we'll be all set for the massive car insurance bill next month...
It's a very tedious day at work today. We'll not get any regular mail delivery in observance of Columbus Day, so I'll have literally nothing to do most of today, and then I'll be inundated with work tomorrow.

Columbus day?????Tell me more, never heard of it; i assume is Christopher Columbus doing the discovery bit; but why does this shut down but not your workplace?
Very very Autummy here today, loads of leaves blowing around, most of them seem to end up settling outside my house which is a pain.
Tired, very very tired. Would like to go back to bed but i can't, lots of stuff to sort out. Plus Patrick N is supposed to be coming round; if i make it upstairs i will have to stagger all the way down again when he arrives. Wish i had one of those stairlift thingys! Or maybe a giant catapult

It is a federal holiday, which means banks, public schools and government offices are closed. Companies in the private sector get to decide for themselves which holidays they're closed.
Giant catapults can be fun, but it's very difficult to steer, unless you attach a rudder to yourself!!

Baloney!
Terri, you're not being a cow to anyone. I saw all of the postings involved, personally I would like to keep my to myself on this one. This time.
Hope you were able to understand my end-of-day babbling emails yesterday.
Hey there Animal!
I had the leftover stuffed butternut squash today, and would put it at the recipe thread, except there's nothing to it:
Cut a butternut squash in half lengthwise. Brush the outer shell with olive oil and lay cut sides down in a shallow baking dish. Bake for about 45 minutes or until flesh is tender. Meanwhile, brown 8 oz. soymeat crumbles, a medium onion, and two or three clovers garlic. Add freshly ground salt and pepper to taste. Remove squash from oven and allow to cool slightly. Scoop out flesh, mix with soy mixture. Stir in 4 oz. of feta cheese crumbles. Stuff mixture into squash rinds, sprinkle with 2 tbsp of crumbled feta, and bake another 15 minutes or until cheese has melted somewhat.
Voila!

PC, I saw those butternut squash things in our supermarket and no one knew what to do with them, I've printed off the recipe for future use
Thanks!

You're welcome! I've also made soup from them, and other stuff. Will share a couple more ideas when I have time to catch a breath.
What a DAY today was. Thankfully my shift is over... but I'm having to leave a bunch of crap to finish in the morning, and I hate doing that...

PS- you can also simply slice them in half lenghtwise, brush them with butter or olive oil, wrap in aluminum foil, and bake for 45 minutes to an hour. They bake up with a similar taste and texture to sweet potato.

Or...you can use the squash in place of the pumpkin in this dish: http://flamingpiecafe.blogspot.com/2005/09/pumpkin-honeybunnies.html

That sounds delicious, too!
Animal, definitely check out the recipes Edward shares- and he's linked to some heavnely stuff- on my "recipes" journal. Terri's posted some lovely ones, and so have a smattering of other folks.
I'm lucky to have found some friends who also like to cook, new ideas are always a good thing.

UKians don't eat squashes nearly often enough, even though they've been in supermarkets for years. I think people are put off by their weird knobliness.
A few years ago, we had a couple of temporary childminders. We left instructions that our twin babies were to be fed the squash that I'd left in the fridge. This confused them, because they couldn't find a bottle of orange squash. (Note to USAnians: 'squash' in the UK is primarily a drink made from sugar, tartrazine and a small amount of fruit juice, served diluted).
Here's a strange thing: beetroot. They are cheap and plentiful, especially at this time of year. You see them piled high in greengrocers. Yet they mainly seem to be eaten pre-cooked, sliced and bottled in vinegar (gak!). Who - apart from me - is buying them all?
btw - never serve borscht to a 3 year old!
Oh...and I have some great ideas for Halloween pumpkins. Last year I did Scooby Doo. This year I'm doing Pikachu...plus a religiously-themed one, to be unveiled at the appropriate time...

Many Tasty Things to do with a Butternut Squash A3310534
My offering was 'stuffed baked butternut squash'.
Your recipe sounds wonderful! Though I'm not sure if I can find butternut squash here . . . will have a look at the market.
Meanwhile, had to wear shoes yesterday (first time since last March! ). It wasn't cold but there was so much RAIN that I couldn't wear sandals. Apparently this was due to Spain's first Tropical Cyclone.
