Some genius at NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration in the U.S. underestimated the U.S. average temperature in 1998 by a quarter of a percentage point, allowing 1934 to zoom to the top of the list as the hottest year ever for the U.S.. When the correction was made, 1998 became the hottest year, with 1992 and 1934 close behind.
