I have just been reading the article about different ways of thinking about mental illness, it caught my attention because I am in the process of applying to train as a Mental Health Nurse. My first degree was in Anthropology.
So... third year medic then? Have you done your elective yet? I have been doing some freelance writing work for a company called Medics Away that specialises in electives.
This is my first day as an h2g2 researcher and I have to confess I am hooked.
Nice to meet you

Hi, nice to meet you I'm glad you had a look at my article, you've reminded me that I need to update my personal space because I'm a fourth year thesedays.
Medicine at this stage in the course is brilliant, I finally get to apply the realms of, what seemed like dull, factual knowledge I've acquired through the first two years. There's so many more skills than just writting essays or remmebring facts.
I haven't done my elective yet, but I've organised it, I'm planning to go to the Outer Hebridies, partly for finanicial reasons, and party because I don't speak any other languages, and it's a nice place to go.
Hi hope that you enjoy being a h2g2 researcher this is a confusing place for a newbie. If you've got any questions do give me a shout and I'll try and help. If you're thinking of writing things for h2g2 then let me know, I might be able to give you a few tips.
Good luck with applying to train as a mental health nurse, I've just (about ten minutes ago) had my psychiartry exam, which I think went alright. I'm sure with your education you'll have no trouble to getting into to nursing. From what I've seen of mental health nursing it's a really challenging job, especially dealing with patients are acutely mentally ill. Good nursing though seems to make more of a difference to the patients that the drugs. And the nurses seem to sort out a lot of the practicaal problems for the patients which makes a really big difference.
Gosh that's a lot of waffle isn't it

Nope - that's not waffle. Thank you for replying.
It's the challenging side of MHN that I am most looking forward to. My wife is a teacher - now THAT is something I could never do - but she finds Mental Illness pretty disturbing so I guess different people are just cut out for different things.
I hope it goes well for you in the Outer Hebrides. I wasat an electives evening at Leicester Uni a couple of months ago and saw a presentation from someone who had done their elective there. I am sure it will be interesting even if it is not the classically exotic location. It is nice to hear of someone who wants to go somewhere other than Australia!
All the best,

Australia really doesn't hold any attraction for me at all to be honest, I don't much like hot weather(when we had the recent hot spell I found it very difficult to manage) and the whole attraction of travelling for me is to experience different cultures. Australia just seems to simalar to this country to want to spend a lot of time there.
I found it disturbing at first, but I was quite pleased with myself how I could build up a rapor with patients that many members of the public would have considered to be the "lock up and throw away the key" material.
I think the six week placement has really changed me, I'm ashamed to adimit that before it I was a little scared of patients with schizophrenia. Now I've spoken to so many I know that most of them are in the community and well treated, and no different to you and me. I also used to find it difficult to talk to elderly patients with dementia. But that's a different issue as I do worry that some patients might not be able to understand that I'm not a doctor.
Good luck..

Well the Z is what my parents wanted to called me, and the "Scout" is the volenteer scheme on h2g2 that I'm part of, and the "can't spell" bit is well, because I can't spell.
