No man is an island entire of itself
Every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main
If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less,
As well as if a promontory were,
As well as is a manor of thy friend's or of thy own were.Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee.John Donne
We live together, we act on, and react to, one another, but always and in all circumstances we are by ourselves. The martyrs go hand in hand into the arena; they are crucified alone. Embraced, the lovers desperately try to fuse their insulated ecstasies into a single self-transcendence; in vain. By its very nature every embodied spirit is doomed to suffer and enjoy in solitude, sensations, feelings, insights, fancies - all these are private and, except through symbols and at second hand, uncommunicable. We can pool information about experiences but never the experiences themselves.
From family to nation, every human group is a society of island universes.
Aldous Huxley

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
