Paul H.'s Surreal World

It's amazing how much we learn at our mothers' knees. It's also amazing how much what we learn comes out wrong because we couldn't understand what she was saying.

My mother used to sing a nonsense song that sounded like the menu at a goat restaurant:

Messy toads, and dozy toads,
And little yams, and ivy,
A kettle of ivy,
Two wooden shoes.

I got the ivy right, but almost nothing else. smiley - erm

Dream: An afternoon with Harry Potter

This was one of the most enjoyable dreams I've had. I dreamed that I visited Martha's Vineyard (an island off the south coast of Massachusetts) because I had heard that Harry Potter was there, busily writing the sixth volume of his memoirs.

Eventually I found him on the second floor of a modest little house built in the Cape Cod style. He was a young man in his early twenties, very similar in appearance to what Daniel Radcliffe will look like when he grows up. He was trying hard to finish his book, but it was not easy to come up with a decent ending. He swore me to secrecy about the fact that (a.) he was a real person, and (b.) J.K. Rowling was just a front who had agreed to pretend to be the author so Harry could work in peace without being hounded by the media.

I didn't ask Harry if his books were autobiographical. It didn't matter anyway. After chatting with him for a while, I slipped downstairs to a little cafe so I could try their seafood sandwiches and chowder.

Beatles on the beach (A dream)

A few nights ago, I dreamed that the Beatles were still
alive, and still young. I went to a store to buy some of
their recordings for the library, though I got scolded
by my boss for wasting money on such poor performers. smiley - erm

What I neglected to tell my boss was that the Beatles
themselves had been at the store giving autographs, and one
of them had invited me to join them at the beach the next day.

So, the next day I sat in the sun on a beach (probably
in Maui, though it could have been Nauset Beach on Cape Cod),
watching the Beatles swim and play volleyball and horse around.

There was also a bit about buying several brand-new mobile
homes, but the Beatles were not involved in that part of the
dream. At least, they didn't drop by for the house-warming. smiley - erm

Getting across the river (A dream)

I dreamed that my choral society had a party every year
in a beautiful park bordered by a river. The road I always
took to get there ran along a river, which I then had
to wade across. Usually the river was shallow enough
that I could wade across it.

However, this year the river was so high and running so fast
that I didn't think I could wade across without being
swept away. I might drown! smiley - sadface There was a ferry downstream,
but it ran irregularly.

So, I retrace the road back to the last fork in the road,
and took the *other* road, which would lead to the other
side of the park. So far so good. The traffic was a lot
heavier on this road, but I was managing to move along
until I passed the home of a friend. The friend was a very
nice lady who invited me in for a bite to eat. "Why don't you
stay for a snack, and then I'll take you to the park?"
she offered. There were several other people in her living room, and
they were all going to ride there, too.

However, she kept bringing in more and more food. By the time
we reached the park for the party, I didn't feel like eating
anything more. smiley - erm
