And I would recommend you start drinking gin, Paul. My mother has drunk it daily since the war and will be 100 this year with all her marbles and bodily functions intact.

Whoops - sorry about the non sequitur there. I could have sworn I had already posted to this thread mentioning that I saw a poster announcing World cucumber day when at the airport this week.

In your defense it's not quite non sequitur: Gin with slices of cucumber was the newest craze here last summer. Well, maybe even before that, I may just have been slow in the uptake

As for longevity the Queen Mum reached almost 102 years and never caught malaria thanks to daily doses of gin

Last summer i bought a new gin which won a lot of publicity and praise.I served it to a few friends just like one of the critics had suggested. And just like his friends mine never guessed that it was absolutely 100 percent alcohol free

I had poured it over in a regular gin bottle and had to show them the original before they actually believed it was alcohol free and thus okay to drive a car after several cool

I'm not going to copy the succes, though. It was quite pricey and I doubt it guarantees longevity

I brought a Greek salad to a party yesterday. I sliced a whole cucumber into it, and had the gas to show for it.

According to my martini loving co worker, ''Every day is Gin day''.

A Cajun martini contains fresh jalapenos, that have been steeped a bit.

I learned today that Marks & Spencer sell 25cl cans of Porn Star Martini cocktails for £2 each

It is apparently a mixture of vodka and passion fruit juice

Sloe gin features plums. As luck would have it, I nurtured a Sloe Plum tree in my backyard all last Summer. It has a permanent spot in the ground now. I hope to see actual plums on it someday.

We usually put a handful of Sloe (or Blackthorn, Prunus Spinosa, a species of flowering plant in the rose family Rosaceae) in a bottle of Akvavit* for a few months to create a liqueur like drink. The Sloe should not be harvested before it has been exposed to nightfrost but because global warming most people just leave them in the deep freezer for some hours.
* Akvavit (or aquavit) is a distilled spirit which has been produced in Scandinavia and Northern Germany since the 15th century. It is distilled from grain and/or potatoes, and is usually flavored with a variety of herbs. Or Sloe.

I love Aquavit and all its relatives (Küstennebel?)

Anyway, my non seq comment was because I was speaking/writing as though continuing from a previous comment which I hadn't realised I hadn't actually posted. Cucumber is the default garnish for Hendricks, so I hadn't pointed that out, but had

Well, I hadn't heard of Hendricks until a couple of years ago, but then, gin was never drunk much in Germany.

Now you can get local gins from any area of the country - and quite delicious they are, too. I have given several bottles of our local gin as presents. Each has its own slight tang of fruits, herbs or spices, or "botanicals" as they are called. They are much nicer than the Gordon's Dry I had been drinking for most of my life.

It also depends very much on which tonic water you mix it with - there are loads of new makes and flavours on the market nowadays.
