ooo and I could get my Dad along, to attempt to light the damp BBQ by over-excessive use of petrol
Who's going to ensure the children play far too close to the lit BBQ?

<42%, ...naan and pulow, Afghan recipe using the same naan bread served with a casserole of rice, carrots, raisins and mutton... ...unless you're vegetarian or vegan, in which case a spiced tofu can be substituted for the mutton...

My Dad's good with fireworks too... I remember the time he set fire to a twenty foot tall eighty foot long conifer hedge in our neighbours garden at teh bottom and set fire to the roof of a shed of the neighbours on one side.... both on the same guy fawkes night

...welding torch for the charcoal as an alternative to excessive smelly petrol...
...though as a matter of fact I've never failed to get the barbeque charcoal started with wood shavings and a single match and will not use charcoal denatured with petrochemicals...
...for that matter if matches are not available, I'll get the fire with the first strike every time with my flint and steel method...
...if flint and steel are not available, a fire drill worked in tandem by three or four people on either end of the longbow, with one in the middle holding the 'drill' (1 inch diameter or significantly larger well seasoned wooden dowel) in place on the cracked log or stump to be ignited with a heavy stone on top of the dowel works drastically better than a spindly little 1 foot long by 3/8 inch diameter green stick fire bow tied off with a piece of cotton twine working a pencil thin twig on the discarded scrap lumber to be ignited...
...which reminds me in turn of a collating experience in a print shop where I once worked, paid bonuses for more rapid completion of the task, somewhere over the 12,000 pages per hour limit I noticed smoke rising from my paper supplies, at which point I slowed down significantly for safety reasons...
I've seen a Hawaiian kahuna ignite a foot long 1/8 diameter plain matchwood splint simply by means of shoving it down a marginally narrower groove cut in the face of a split yellow hibiscus log, the most elegant non-chemical firemaking technique I've ever seen demonstrated...

Notes on item 4, post 69, the process is physical enough it can help to keep you warm in cold weather conditions.

There are people in my neighborhood who go in for barbecues, even if it's January and snowing, and the electricity has gone out. Heck, putting food on a barbecue grill would be about the only way to get a hot meal when nothing electric is working.

Head flash moment, people dressed in arctic garb, huddled around barbeque pit, breaking out the two foot diameter barbeque on stilts, never mind the tabletop economy of the hibachi.

Is the barbecue on stitlts because the snow is so deep?

paulh, vaccinated against the Omigod Variant Posted Feb 4, 2011
That should have been stilts, not stitlts.
The Useless Bloody Loonies Club
ITIWBS Posted Feb 4, 2011
I must not be seeing double.
Stilts (legs) to avoid melting the snow underneath, though on the other hand, nothing like a raging bonfire to clear an area of snow and provide a little dry and warm ground space, where safe and reasonable... snowed in on a lonely mountain trail perhaps....

friend of mine insisted on bbq'ing the duck for xmas - yes, outside in the danish winter
i told him he was crazy, but he insisted that the duck would be just as good as the one i had in my oven
on that remark i rested my case

Hi, Pierce.
I am sorry I won't be seeing you at the May 14 meet, as you've mentioned you can't make anything after April 16. Let's hope we can meet some other time.
