last night I had supper with my parents. I brought them a cherry pie.

Today is my dad's birthday. He's 90 years young--or, as he himself puts it, 45 twice.

Slight near miss coincidence Paul - it's my dad's birthday tomorrow. He's a few years younger though!

Dad is in great spirits. Mom has bronchitis, but is otherwise okay. She is taking some medicine that the hospital gave her. To hear Mom put it, old age is a trial, but it beats the alternative. I think she misses being able to get up and around and bring things to people. She enjoyed being a hostess before she got relegated to the walker.

my mum agrees. it is difficult for her to let go of the role she has been playing for so many decades. i keep telling her to relax, let it be and take the SEP-solution. it really is not her responsibility what happens to grandkids and stuff and we can take care of ourselves (well, most of us anyway)

her brain agrees but her emotions have a hard time

it's an unavoidable part of becoming an old mother, i guess

luckily she is mostly in a good mood and i can always make her laugh

It's all part of the process of gradually separating oneself from this world prior to leaving it for another.

yeah, makes you wonder what we'll do when our time comes, doesn't it?

and how our family members will think and react and such like

We will probably act the way our predecessors did. Many of us will fight hard for life.

hm, well, up to now i haven't acted very much like my father did, so i guess there is still some hope for my children

just thought this up and I hope everyone wins their own individual war (on health or whatever)

On the health care front, a piece of conceptual art from the Pennsylvania Poconos...

Before you groan and worry that this thread is being hijacked for some intellectual purpose, let me point out that this conceptual art was a group effort by rural people from the anthracite coal mining region.

Step One: Somebody hit a deer.
Step Two: Somebody placed this deer reverently on an abandoned sofa.
Step Three: The next day, somebody added a lamp and table.
Step Four: The day after that, somebody contributed a tv and tv stand.
Step Five: The day after that, somebody penned a political message.
Step Six: Everybody stopped to take pictures.
Step Seven: The neighbours called the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, or PENNDoT, to complain about the road hazard.

They take those speed limits as, er, suggestions...I find driving around those curves hair-raising, largely because the people behind me want me to take the curves at high speed...it's a bubba-power thing...
