The SATs Lottery
Posted Jul 5, 2001
I'm still feeling mortified. Our end of KS test results were good, but out of my top group, who can all write superbly, about six made a bad error of judgement on the writing paper. They did a playscript. Not something it's easy to show their skills in. As a result they got below average scores on their writing paper. This reflects on my teaching, of course, no matter how well they can really write and how well the rest of them did (the ones who chose wisely).
Good news too, though. The world music/latin band looks like getting sorted. J and I have the A list sorted - music we can play next week if need be (given the other musicians) and the B and C list too. Also, Barbara Thompson has given me permission to do her portrait - something to get going on this summer. That will make two in the series! My design for a CD cover got used for the county music CD - good fun. Playing djembe tomorrow at Bedworth Civic Centre. Daughter got level 8 for her English KS3 tests. Should boost her confidence a little. Saw some of my compatriots tonight; a visiting dance/acapella group from Bulawayo. They were knockout. Wish things could have been different and I could still be there.

Partnership Review?
Posted Jun 14, 2001
We insisted on calling it an inspection, no matter how many times they told us it wasn't. That was the LEA inspectors coming in to see how we were doing and to give us some tips. They were due to come and watch a Maths lesson in y5/6 - half of mine and half of my colleague's. As it happens they stayed in mine. I wasn't very impressed. I was hoping to be able to be normal after half an hour!! The feedback was positive and what really irks is that I can't help feeling pleased. I really don't value their judgement, so why should I care?

Mink!!
Posted Jun 11, 2001
Seeing animals in their (natural?) habitat, doing their thing is like winning at bingo. (How would I know - I've never played bingo). I saw a mother mink today. I took the scenic route home and she stopped on the path just in front of me. She seemed completely unfazed and I wondered for a minute if she'd run up and bit me on the ankle :D Actually, she was wondering if her babies, who were making clicking noises in the undergrowth, should cross or stay where they were. In the end, she went and collected one and the other one followed her across. Wow!

Pain is Nature's way

Of telling you to go to Casualty. Actually - there still wasn't much point in going there - though I was impelled to do so today due to the increase of pain in my ribcage to the point where I couldn't speak to the children to tell them to pack up. At the A and E I waited 3 and a half hours to be told all of what I had already found out myself, bar the glad tidings that I hadn't punctured a lung or other essential organ!

who'd have thought

a bit of terpsichory with a bunch of old fogies could be so much fun? It is when you know a bit and make up stuff as you go along. Went to Kenilworth school last night were they have a fortnightly dance - ballroom/latin. Jim and I are pretty much able to waltz and quickstep our way around the floor. The latin stuff is a bit of a laugh - we definitely need to learn some more steps, though we're inclined to improvise a bit as we go. We actually learned the basic salsa sequence from the video on Friday, but haven't had a chance to use it yet. Surprisingly there is a friendly atmosphere, and what's more, I won (though J paid for raffle tickets) a picnic set - crockery etc. Not bad really!
