Sir

The R4 To Sir With Love was really rather good, unlike the Poitier/Lulu film version and the later TV perversion Please Sir.

Sunday shopping has been done.

Miah got 15ft up a tree this morning, and was quite blaise about the whole thing. She got herself down out of it too.

Bagels n' roast beef for tea tonight, with home-made crisps (an experiment).

I have to go to Court tomorrow morning.

Incense

A useful cat frustration accessory.

At 1am the cat comes in for some food. The barricades immediately get put up to stop her from playing a 1.05am I want out bongo solo on the door.

Miah however perseveres, and squeezes through the narrowest crack to get to the door. Answer = light a stick on incense next to the barricade. In the last few weeks we have worked our way through Ylang Ylang, Jasmine Opium and Citrus. As of tonight we are on to coconut.

In most student households the omnipresent stink of incense is a sure fire indicator that many illicit and interesting drugs are being consumed. In this household it is a basic tool of feline management.

I spent the morning in court watching the debt cases. Susan spent the morning doing shop work on the PC. I bough a £5 chair from the charity shop. We’ve just had bacon for tea.

PS Oh! Miah chases after Frisbees.

Hardy

I sat ootside in the cauld listening to old radio plays. Miah and another cat had a fight somewhere up in a tree. It's raining now. 5pm. Where has the day gone? Susan will have been busy - today is veg box delivery day. I've made a pot of... well... stuff for tea.

Phil Daniels really is an excellent Quilp. Last week there was a wonderfully scary dialogue between Dick Swiveller and Dick Swiveller as Mr Punch. It was really creepy.

I don't believe that Britain is on the edge of some sort of social and moral collapse; things remain pretty constant - victorian yobs become C 21st hoodies; and I don't believe that the world is as awful and hellish a place as people say it is. But still, nor is it any bed of roses, and living here - anywhere - is a chore; all a matter of filling the long and empty hours till death. I didn't ask to be born and have no desire to outlive my tenure on the planet by a second; and think that if I could erase myself and all memory of me by pressing a button, with no distress to anyone else, I'd do it in an instant. It might be different if I thought there was any worthwhile thing - even one - that I could do well... if I could look up over the walls of the maze...

Start Me Up

I made a start to my new job today - the research assistant work at the Law School. I didn't have much to do, but it included setting up an Excel spreadsheet (!)

Miah swatted Susan out of the way this morning in a desperate break for freedom. She left Susan reeling, and got out for 8 hours from 8 'til 4. Was glad to see me return home, though.

Toad in the Hole for tea.

It has been an OK day today, but it looks like the evening may be the best of it.

Cold, though.

I therefore have ALL of the windows in the house open.

Oh! there are chestnuts on the cobbles in the High Street and the leaves have started to turn. The ivy? - whatever - clinging to New Kings is beginning to go russet. It's AUGUST!

Let it be recorded, by the way - this happened last Friday, but I haven't noted it yet - that my friend got his LLM (with Distinction) last Friday, and is heading off south (to 'Annieville', in fact) to embark upon his PHD.

I am whooshing thru' 4.50 From Paddington at the minute. Stylistically, I believe, the text betrays signs that the book was dictated rather than written.

Susan will be in Hebden Bridge next week - a well-earned break. I will be left alone to cope with in-out-in-out Miah, which will be interesting - I need to sleep with the light on when I'm left on my own, so Miah cannot expect me to keep on opening the door for her... there might be zombies...

Mixed

It's nice and bright and hot then it's overcast and, well, not too cold... a mixed day. I went in to town this morning, then came home and put the cat out. Indian cairry-oot for tea tonight. I'm thinking about watching the movie of Bless This House tonight - Sid James' final comedy vehicle. I remember when the news of his death came out. Elvis was nothing compared to Sid James. I remember watching Bless This House back ihe 70s, in my parents' house. Bless This House, On the Buses, The Sweeney, The New Avengers, The Persuaders... with tea and toast and Orkney cheddar cheese.
