If I look to where the moon is I can see a faint red smudge. If I look directly above, or behind, I can see plenty of stars

Saw a few glimpses of the blood red disk between the clouds. By no means clear. The edge is starting to turn silver-white, so I guess it is about over.

If there's a Full Moon, don't the sun and the moon have to be on opposite sides of the earth? If they were on the same side it'd be a New Moon. And the moon *has* to be on the opposite side of the earth in order to be within the earth's shadow, right?

No, you got it correct. The Sun and Moon are on the same side of the Earth during a SOLAR eclipse and opposite sides of the Earth during a Lunar eclipse.
However, tides increase either way as the moon creates high tides both on the near and far sides of the Earth.

I don't think they're suggesting that it was carved 200 million years ago, just that the stone was formed that long ago.
But still, why would ancient man carve a 8.5m tall piece of sand stone to look exactly like something formed by either water erosion or glaciation?
