Here's a wonderful short film about the blizzard in New York. It was shot, edited and finished in less than two days. It's an homage to Man With A Camera.

Exactly an inch of rain between 6pm Friday and 3am Sunday morning, but the online rain gauge hasn't updated since then and it's still raining at 8.30am.

Take the plants in because there's going to be a frost, take them back out again. Take the plants in because there's going to be a frost, take them back out again. Take the plants in because there's going to be a frost, take them back out again.

This is getting tiresome.

Plenty of frost on the rooves and the cars this morning. We went down to 27 last night, possibly 26 (-3.3C) smiley - brr

Yesterday morning when I left for work, the temp was in the high 50's. From the minimal weather report, I knew there was a 30% chance of rain and that there was a cold front coming, but I didn't know when it was going to reach here. For some reason I was expecting it either late at night or early this morning. Needless to say, it was a rather chilly motorcycle ride home last night. Oh, and very windy.

And this afternoon was sunny and very nearly warm, even though the recorded maximum was only 50/10. It felt much more balmy in the abundant sunshine.

Yea, I had to scrape ice off my windshield last night. That's something I haven't needed to do in years.

Oh good grief, here we go again smiley - headhurts

After daytime temperatures in the 70s this weekend (despite a forecast of rain) and pleasantly mild nighttime lows in the low to mid 50s (59/15 is the least we'll see tonight if the forecast is right), we're going to be below freezing on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Guess I'll be bringing the plants in... again.

If my plants can't survive outside I don't need 'em. Needless to say there are various pots on my deck full of brown stuff. Might be dirt. I did finally get around to throwing away last season's hanging pots (after they'd been looking brown and shrivelled for a couple of months).

I was standing outside in a light sweater earlier without a jacket on thinking how nice and warm it seemed out in the sunlight. When I came back in and checked the temp it was about 39F. I must be getting climatized.

The 10+ inches of snow we had last week was kind of fun, tho smiley - ok
(No, really, it was!)

Seeing this thread again is like meeting up with an old friend smiley - smiley

Sunshine and the odd whispy high cloud here today (NZ). 20C just now, due to get up to 27 around mid-afternoon.

The remains of Tropical Cyclone Wilma thumped the North Island yesterday - masses of flooding and wind damage. We had a blasting east-south-easterly which was the very edge of the system. Happily it's moved off towards the Chatham Islands today and we're back to high pressure conditions smiley - biggrin

So saying, I'm off into the garden.... smiley - run

How nice to see familiar faces here again after a protracted absence smiley - biggrin

Y'know broe, there are mornings here when the sun's shining in a clear blue sky, there isn't a breath of wind and air the temperature is in single digits C, but I swear I could stand there and sunbathe in the warmth as long as there's no wind. But the moment there's the merest zephyr of a breeze... GOOSE PIMPLES!!! Thankfully, Texas gets a lot intensely calm days.

Which direction are your prevailing winds from FB? Do you get rain shadow from the mountains?

By the way, it's threads like this, plus Movies and Dropping Like Flies that I'd be very sad to see go down the Swannee if the BBC didn't pass on the database to h2g2's new owner so they keep the entire legacy of the site smiley - sadface

I'd hate to see this thread go, too, Gosho. It's one of the things I always see on my infrequent visits to hootoo.

Apparently the 10+ inches of snow we had last week was only the 'dress rehearsal'. The weather forecast last night:

Freezing drizzle/rain beginning Monday night into Tuesday, with a total ice accumulation of 1/2" to 1" across the metro, and then the real fun begins. THUNDERsnow (or perhaps thunder freezing rain-turning-to-snow) dropping a minimum of 8" on top of the ice, but in many places expect 12" and more. smiley - yikes

The forecaster summed it up: all the ice from the ice storm a few years back (which knocked out power to most of the metro for up to a week) combined with the best (or worst) of the Blizzard of '82.

At this rate my kids won't be out of school until July. I think we've already had 5 snow days.

That'll be the same system that's going to hit us midweek too, and now they've revised the temperature forecast.

Yesterday the forecast lows for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday were only a few degrees below freezing. Now they're saying 23 (-5C) for Tuesday night, 19 (-7.2) for Wednesday night, 20 (-6.6) for Thursday night and 30 (-1.1) for Friday night with daytime maxima in the 30s and 40s (single digits C).

The minimum temperature last night was... 64/17.8 smiley - cdouble

We have a hot nor'wester blowing this morning smiley - puff Rain showers in it too apparently (according to the Met Service).

The prevailing winds are seasonal, Gosho. And also dependent upon La Nina/El Nino. Because this is a La Nina year, we're likely to get more nor'easters with southerly changes happening right through summer. In an El Nino, it's drier northerlies with barely a southerly at all.

Most years December is characterised by very strong hot nor'westers off Australia, interspersed by cool southerly changes when temps can drop 15 degrees in 15 minutes smiley - wow.

Winters are a mix of southerlies and cold cold easterlies.

We have some rain shadow from the S Alps. The west coast certainly gets a LOT more rain than we do on the east. I'm happy about that smiley - smiley
