No, Texas winter is just like English summer, which has often been described as "three fine days and a thunderstorm" smiley - rofl

Yeah, but then we get another cold front smiley - headhurts

Wait, no, they've revised that to 60° on Sunday. Probably not much of a consolation to you though.

Coming home tonight reminded me of winters when I was a kid and we'd go visiting the relatives in the depths of winter. We'd come back at 11pm to a freezing cold house, light the gas fire and sit around in our coats until the place warmed up. Which is pretty much what I'm doing right now at 7.30pm smiley - brr

smiley - yikes

I haven't sat down on a toilet seat as cold as that in many a long year smiley - senior If, eight months from now, you hear me complaining about the hundred degree temperatures we're getting... please slap me.

smiley - laugh

I remember when I was a kid and we'd spend the day out somewhere and come home
to a sweltering sweat box. We had radiator heat and a faulty thermostat, it would stick 'on'. The display temp would peg out at 90, and it would be at least that hot in the house. That didn't happen every time, of course, but often enough that I remember. The radiators were nice for laying blankets on before bedtime, or mittens & scarves before going out smiley - smiley

Durn I miss radiators!

Snow!

And the entire city has shut down. No, really. All the schools are closed. All the universities and colleges are closed. All the city offices are closed. All the county offices are closed. CapMetro is running a Sunday bus service. And all for less than one inch of snow. Seriously. You can see the road through the covering of snow.

Fail.

Of course, a good many of those people who supposedly can't get to work because of the conditions will somehow, magically, be able to get to the movies. We're going to get smiley - bleeped today.

Epic fail.

I don't think I'm being unfair here. I've seen snow like this once or twice before in my 11 years in Austin, so while it's rare it does happen. But in the 13 years I drove for a living in London I think I only had to deal with snow no more than three times so it's not exactly something common in that neck of the woods either, and while I remember the roads slowing down to a crawl as the snow started to fall on one of those occasions, everybody went to work/school/college the next day. I had a foot of snow on top of my van.

And now I'm getting emails from our beer and wine suppliers that deliveries are cancelled for the day smiley - cross

So that's it until Monday, cos I know they ain't coming out tomorrow. Friday is our biggest delivery day of the week - we get all our weekend beer and wine on Friday.

Just as I expected, our local snowpocalypse was a false alarm. Yesterday, in expectation of frozen and snowy conditions they decided to close JSC for half a day... before a single snowflake or drop of freezing rain had fallen. I checked outside about 4:30 this morning and there was ice all over my porch and stairs, but no snow. When I got up to let the dog out at around 8:30, the ice was all gone and still no sigh of snow.

I knew the predictions were going to be wrong. Wednesday's forecast called for temps in the 20's for Thursday morning, but they were only right around freezing. They also called for the "wintry mix" to arrive yesterday afternoon, but all we got were a couple of 'thick' raindrops around 1:00 pm. A couple of hours later when they decided to close the center, I knew they were wrong, but I didn't care because I don't work on Fridays anyway. smiley - nahnah

Standing at the bus stop this morning was just bliss smiley - bigeyes So quiet, so peaceful... and so funny to see the handful of cars out there going past me at speeds less than walking pace. To be fair, the road was pretty icy. When my bus finally showed up and I rode my regular journey, even though driver was driving carefully and slowed down on the engine as he approached the stop where I get off, the bus still slid a little when he finally used the brake, very gently.

We actually weren't as busy today as I thought we'd be. Definitely not as busy as the day of the ice storm a few years ago. I think we got maybe six out of the 15 or so deliveries I was expecting today. Two contacted me and said they're delivering tomorrow. As for the others... who knows.

But as for CapMetro, epically epic fail. The snow has pretty much all gone and the roads are dry again. We got above freezing at lunchtime today for the first time since 7.58am on Tuesday. It was sunny, it was even warm! It melted the snow. It's not going to be any colder tonight than it was last night, and it'll be warmer than it was on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, but they've decided suspend all services after 7pm smiley - cross Which isn't saying much because there are hardly any buses after 10pm on Sunday anyway.

No hot water this morning, so no shower smiley - cross I might have time to use the shower at work before I have to open the bar.

The cold weather has most definitely outstayed its welcome. Whatever residual heat that was left in the bricks and mortar has gone and it's impossible to keep the place warm now. These apartments weren't built for cold weather like this. They weren't particularly built for hot weather either, not by today's standards of insulation and energy conservation anyway.

The forecast says lows for tonight and Sunday around freezing, then 38 for Monday night's low, back to 30 for Tuesday but then more low to mid 20s for Wednesday and Thursday nights with the possibility of freezing rain on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.

Next Saturday is looking promising though - 64 during the day and 44 at night smiley - bigeyes Of course, that's a week off and will no doubt change. The mid 60s they were forecasting for tomorrow has been revised down to mid 50s.

The days are already getting appreciably longer smiley - biggrin Even though it still doesn't seem like it's getting lighter earlier, I can tell by where on my kitchen wall the sun shines as it rises over the buildings behind mine in the morning, and over which part of the roof of the building opposite it goes down over in the evening.

For a few weeks around this time of the year, and in late October, I think, the sun goes down in such a way that it shines directly onto the spot where I sit on the sofa for several minutes. When that happens I know that either spring or winter is not far behind.

And the amount of kitchen wall that's lit up by the sun gets bigger and bigger, and stays in sunlight for longer. The balcony too.

Jahesius Harold Ke-rist on a bike, it's freezing out there! smiley - brr It was around 43/44F overnight until a cold front came through around 7am I think, and now it's around 20 with a wind chill in single figures.

And you know that it's going to be in the 70s again by the weekend, right?

Daytime looks pretty nice - mid 60s on Saturday and low 70s on Sunday with plenty of sunshine both days, but it could get a bit taters at night.

Yea... especially friday night. I'll be in a sleeping bag, under thick sheets and fleece in a "cot tent". Should be alright and snug.
