Good Reasons to Get Out of Dodge

Hyp, since quinoa has no gluten, and [iirc] you have a sensitivity to gluten, it crossed my mind that you might have mentioned it earlier. Anyway, the material I read mentions that the Incas fermented it as well as milling it for flour.
You can use a rice cooker, indeed the same proportions and time as rice. The grains cook up a pale golden yellow, and the germ separates from the kernel and looks like a tiny white "C".
Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador are the major sources; it's farmed now on a limited basis in Colorado. The boxed or bulk offerings Stateside have been pre-washed to remove the saponins. It's a clever survival technique in that the birds won't eat it, otherwise it would actually be very good birdseed.
It germinates within a couple hours, and apparently malts just as quickly.

hah! good heavens ... you creative buzzing tribe of reality benders ...
heheheheheh
ah yes ....pokerboy and the big win .......we are meant to be on Brighton beach right now ... ingesting the hedonistic salty scruffy air ... but now we can't travel till early July ... various itchy fate-bugs (not pierced .. ) rearranged our schedule ....
no matter ... we were skyclad and oiled (Hawaiian Tropic of course ... ) on our home beach yesterday .... very fine t'was .... heheheheheh ... ah yes ...
hey Leo .... melting DNA? what? this is incredibly interesting and cryptic .... trade you cake for the answer to this mystery ...
the answer?
Steve ... splendid person of the hallucinatory lake legends ... what wondrous descriptions of your moments ... .. leeches, tortoise n' all ... ..... ah yes .. to a Yes soundtrack ... splendid .. (Tales has to be one of the finest album covers ... I love all the Yes album covers ... )
quinoa .... ....just lerv quinoa ... with streamed vegetables and a tahini topping ... you into Tahini? we are the Tahini kids ..
Hyp .. the pierced mantis .. hmmmm ... I suspect the monkeyman . in the mask of a mantis ... with a gold cross earring in his right ear ...
funny thing .. the monkeyman visions .. they are always half human half something other .. even the ZotKats were half trickster ... I suspect too much Tahini in the diet ... or itchy fate bugs ...
I had pierced ears for a couple of years ... interestingly it was my right earlobe that went septic .... together we're a team ... I didn't renew the piercing process ... too faint and weedy to contemplate ...
<Talking Heads .. fine band ...
oh ... gotta go ...
just getting going here ...
oh well .. later later

Talking Heads not just of the variety you see on late night countdown best of type shows.
Well we know where we're going, but we don't know where we've been
I read this piece in the arts section of the paper yesterday - http://music.guardian.co.uk/electronic/story/0,,2286998,00.html - about David Byrne's latest artwork. The Battery Maritime Museum in New York has been transformed into a large singular musical instrument, played by whoever turns up at the old pump organ console (marked in large letters on the floor 'Please Play') connected to the building via wires and pipes. What a brilliant concept and one I would like to see.
And we know what we're knowing, but we can't say what we've seen

quinoa is quite different than many grains - I'd recommend it. h2g2 has an entry on it somewhere... good stuff. Very interesting shape and everything. Worth a try.
Leeches...
Ear piercing - funny you mention it. I've been getting my ears pierced for the first time for around 4 years now. My friends keep threatening to drag me off to do it, but their busy lives keep getting in the way. I'm still waiting. I think a nice little nose stud is very becoming, though. But that's no place to put an insect piercing. I think an insect would go very well on the eyebrow.
We melt DNA by raising the temperature until it denatures, unravels, whatever you want to call it. Really we're melting it after it hybridizes with mortholino, a DNA analog, to see if it becomes more stable. And I've never heard of any of the stuff you mentioned, Phred. Google hath failed you. We use the "heat it up" method. Simple as that.
Electrical engineering? Never! It sounds so dull. Just chemical and biological. This is a chemical and biological engineering lab, and they stuck us with the minor project so we don't ruin anything too important. But it's fun and it's education and it's paid and it looks awesome on the resume, so what else is there to ask for?
Park ranger...? Sounds like the "which one does not belong" answer.

Hypatia Posted Jun 25, 2008
Of all the suggestions so far, I like park ranger the best. That is my sort of job. You could pick a neat historical site. Not all park rangers sit atop fire towers in the forest. Some of them work in really places. You could help preserve America's history and wilderness areas.
I'm convinced. I must try quinoa. I'll see if I can locate some. So you use it like rice? As a side dish?

cactuscafe Posted Jul 1, 2008
yes ... Park Ranger would be good ... 'cept you would have to be brave .. stare eye to eye with bears and bugs and things ... and I would cry .. ...
heheheheheh .. here we have Park Rangers I think .. on Dartmoor and places ... but no bears of course ... ... just eye to eye with horses and cows ... and sheep ...and birdies ... and hairy phantom creatures .. the Beeste of Exmoor etc ..
and thanks Leo for the definiton of the DNA meltdown ... are you a scientist then? a biologist? I thought you worked in publishing ... hmmmm .. that's weird .. I must have got lost in the loop somewhere ..
nah ... heheheheheh .. me? lost in the loop? heheheheheh .. loop? what loop?
so ... just caught up with the 'CloudReport .. hey guys ... .. Lake Superior .. magic reports ... its good that travellers go places .. so that readers like me can absorb word atmospheres ... and photo atmospheres .. and go slowly nowhere ..
must be good to know what to do when part of your RV falls off .. like the exhaust pipe .. I wouldn't know what to do ... I would go whaaaaaooorgh and go to a motel and watch TV all night till my eyes hurt, and eat peanut butter sandwiches and hope the problem goes away ...
not very zen .. heheheheheheh ..
I keep thinking of a Handsome Family lyric ......kind of like Lake Superior .. 'cept its Lake Michigan ....
<>
....from The Woman Downstairs ..Handsome Family .. lyrics Renee Sparks) ...
I love the Handsome Family ...saw them in Brighton last year.. if I could write like Renee Sparks I would be ... erm .. Renee Sparks ... no point wanting to be someone else is there ... really ... just for one day?
who would you like to be for one day? actually .. I don't think I would like to be anyone else ... in truth .. it would be weird ..wearing strange shoes and eating things with added pepper ... but then you wouldn't know you were someone else would you .. 'cos you would be you .. the other you .. for a day ..
thanks for the David Byrne link, Phil ... always good to get the news about the amazing mind of Mr Byrne ..
how was your Glasto experience? I will have to await your journal ...
watched on TV all weekend .. didn't see you .. but then I don't know what you all look like ... .. loved all the flags in the crowd ... and people carrying strange things on poles ... little inflatable horses and lifesize cardboard cutouts of Bruce Forsyth ..
saw the wondrous .... yes ... erm ... wondrous ... Neil Diamond on the Pyramid Stage ...
erm .. hi Hyp ... OK OK I'm going ..
he was superb ...really superb ... in fact I have his new album on order .... true true I really do ..
uh oh ... a tomato rain does fall .... ...
seems that Leonard Cohen was rather beautiful ... in his Homburg hat and dapper suit ... no TV coverage on his request .. but lots of bootleg footage on YouTube .. sorry Len .. but had to take a peek to hear the blessed you ....
....
and there we are then ..

Kerouac wrote "Desolation Angels" in a fire tower in the Cascades National Park in Washington. I don't think he was actually a park ranger...maybe a lesser species like fire watcher...when I met him he was projectile vomiting cheap red wine in a the bathroom of a sleazy bar in Saint Peters burg.
Speaking of literary genius (or at least perseverance), I just finished (for the 2nd time) the 1,510 page novel "Harlot's Ghost" by Norman Mailer. It's hard to top his first novel, but the old boy published over 27 books between divorces and barfights. Some of them are good reads.
Xantief will be pleased to know that I've tried nude canoeing in his honor. The Ontonagon river canoe trip on the upper Michigan peninsula has about 15 miles of pristine beauty. It's too shallow for powerboats and completly devoid of humans...nothing but eagles and beavers... So I stripped down on a sand bar and went for a swim. Pictures are available upon request or by placing an order for the special Firecloud non-swimsuit calendar.
We're parked in Sault Ste. Marie on the Canadian border. We're on the St. Mary river watching the big iron ore carriers navigate the locks between Superior and Huron.
A mama muskrat has been moving her brood in front of us all afternoon. I don't think she can count because she went back to check five times after she had them all transferred. There is also a flock of ten Canadian geese floating nearby.
I remember isolated lakes in Ontario where you can camp alone and fish for walleyes. We'll be driving though Ontario for the next week or two. Maybe we can find one of those lakes. The Canadians bulldoze a dirt road to a lake and build a fish-cleaning table...not really formal. The last time we were here my son was 13 and we brought a canoe. He hooked one that towed his canoe around for awhile.
Anyhow...it's expensive to use cell phones or aircards in Canada, so this may be my last update for awhile unless we score some wi-fi.

Rev Nick lives in Ontario. Course Ontario is a big place. You may not be going near his town.
Some park rangers work in cities far from bears, panthers and caribou. At San Jose Mission in San Antonio, for example. Or the Jefferson Expansion Memorial (Gateway Arch) in St. Louis. Or the Statue of Liberty. They may call them something different in New York. Something fancier and more refined sounding. There are lots of historical sites staffed by park rangers.
Leo, I wish you great success and happiness in whatever field you choose - even if it sounds absolutely awful to me.
When we want something, we have to go out and make it happen. Things seldom just fall into our laps. With this in mind, I have decided to apply myself and create a nice little second career for when I retire. I'm the only one who can make it happen, and by jimminy that's what I intend to do!

Lady C .. been thinking of you luvvy ... ..read your journal update re spinal stenosis ... hope the pain isn't too debilitating ..
I have this book called 'Women of the Beat Generation' .. writings from the .. erm .. women of the beat generation .. who tended not to see the limelight at the time ...
one of the chapters is about Jan Kerouac (1952-1996)... daughter of Jack ... which was really interesting ... Jack didn't acknowledge her as his daughter till she was nine ..

nude canoeists are getting everywhere !.... mmmm ... (blush) ... nice thought... (blush again ) .. heheheheheh

My holiday festivities will begin this evening, actually. I'll probably attend a family thing with the Muse. The neighborhood where he lives always has a parade for the kids on July 3rd. Just a small, fun thing. His great nieces and nephews will be marching in it. Then we're going over to his brother's to hang out for a bit.
Then tomorrow we'll be having the regular family cookout and fireworks. I wish Lady C could be here, but that isn't possible. This year I'm taking the baked beans, potato chips and hot dog buns. We always have a good time. I'm not sure if anything interesting enough for a journal entry will occur, but one never knows. I do know the spud launcher has been modified once again. Third time's the charm and all that.

hope you all had a good weekend festivities ...
and its just attempted-sticky-postcards from me for the next two weeks from this salty scruffy Brighton ... which could be Paradiso with imagination .....but in fact its Brighton which is OK in fact because who needs Paradiso when you got Brighton ...which strange poetry lurking around every corner ... like a curly poodle entity in the hopeful rain ...

Other than eating enough for all of my multiple personalities and still being bloated and generally yucky feeling as a result, my holiday weekend was a good one.
The little neighborhood children's parade Thursday evening was a hoot. The kids decorated their bicycles, rode those battery powered cars, etc. Very cute. Then Friday the Muse's sister did a family brunch. It would have been rude of me not to sample everything. I wound up with enough calories for the day by 11:30. The evening cookout and fireworks were enjoyable, as always. I sort of rolled through the door and into bed.
Saturday I did ribs with my home made BBQ sauce, black beans with lime juice, cornbread and watermelon. I have this cute cast iron scone pan that I use for cornbread. Yesterday I did biscuits and gravy for brekkie then BBQ chicken (had leftover sauce), sweet potato fries and lemon blueberry bundt cake.
I pretty much ate for three solid days.

What? Oh...! Hello again...bathed in the rays of the internet once more...and fortified with memories of the most wonderful 4th of July with bearded cousins, potato cannons, far travellers and huge hot dogs...

Hey Phredster. How's life on the road?
It's going to be a looooooooooong four months. I'd like to hibernate until the election is over. I did order a nifty teeshirt that should be delivered today. It says "01/20/2009...The End of an Error" There were some I would rather have, but I'd be lynched if I wore them around here.
I can't get away this weekend -two library events - but next Friday I'm going to Kansas to check on Lady C. She is going to have an MRI on Tuesday, so I imagine we'll know something by the time I get there. She's still in a lot of pain and her mobility has suffered dramatically. We need to find out the cause and get it treated. My...ahem...fellow is going with me. He's met Mother and the bearded cousins. Time for him to meet the Kansas bunch.
Quinoa. I found some. Bob's Red Mill. I also found a small quinoa cookbook on Amazon. I plan to cook some this weekend. I sure hope I like it. I have rice noodles to use instead of regular pasta. They are right tasty. And there is a cookbook at the library that has a recipe for English muffins that uses gluten-free flours and no yeast. I can't imagine them being fit to eat, but I'm so hungry for a sandwich that I'm going to try it.

Update on mobility:
I have very little. I can get up and down and walk a ways with a walker, but am pretty much confined to an office chair with rollers. I have an extreme amount of pain in my left calf on the inside just below the knee and the right hip gives me problems. However, I have this wonderful man living with me who takes it all in stride and does whatever needs to be done. We have rice in the steamer as we speak for fried rice this evening.
I will find something out after the MRI Tuesday, I hope. At least we may know just how to deal with the problem. The main thing worrying me right now is that I am extremely claustrophobic..............
Sorry about the whining...........thank you all for listening.

Phred Firecloud Posted Jul 14, 2008
I hope that the MRI helps the doctors diagnose the problem and correct it quickly. Let us know about your progress.

Phred Firecloud Posted Jul 14, 2008
Mrs. Phred had some problem with a knee about a year ago. It cut into her tennis which made her very unhappy. They did an MRI and the doctor said she had a torn miniscus (whatever that is). They did some microsurgery and after about six weeks she has been fine. The doctors are pretty smart about that kind of thing these days....hope it works out as well for you...

Phred Firecloud Posted Jul 14, 2008
My own hiking and tennis has been severely curtailed since Colorado due to a painful heel...I tried to make an appointment with a podiatrist here in Burlington, Vermont but they all said that they couldn't see me before September...I think I'll have to wait until I get to Florida...meanwhile Mrs. Phred is out a tennis partner...I did stand there and let her practice her serve to me one day without moving much, but it's not the same...
There's an interesting condition called plantar facilitis that sounds a lot like what I feel...loosing weight, steroid injections and a specific stretching excercise are indicated....if I've got the diagnosis right...
Strangely I met a man in a lodge at the Voyageur National Park who had experienced the same thing...he was a former jogger and looked very healthy...he had scars on both knees from where his knees had been replaced...he showed me his homemade shoe inserts that he wears all the time...
A very minor complaint compared to what you have been up against...
