WE ARE ALL GREEK
I've just arrived (27/3/05) by way of a referal from the late great Get Writing group and like the look of my first browse around, especially the Language and linguistics thread. I posted a lengthy response to a great discussion before realising I was 6 months late. I dropped out of a PhD I was doing at Sydney Uni when a study trip to London got really interesting and I landed a copywriting job at a big ad agency. I really enjoyed getting out of uni and being paid for wacky concepts. When I was made redundant January '03 I was quite pleased too as my soul was getting sick of advertising fags to Asia and I fancied writing things that hold the attention longer than a byte. Most of my ideas, for tv, video, radio, journalism, have ridden a wave of enthusiasm that crashed before realisation, but I'm determined my audio guide/cd rom of A Stoke Newington PsychoGeography will bring the spirit and living history of my locale to an appreciative and paying crowd.
I enjoy writing poetry and rarely try to publish. I love John Ashberry, JH Prynne, Anna Carson, and any weirdly wonderful novel verse.
I also paint a bit like a wild animal and watch out for wonders round London galleries and streets.
Learning ancient Greek was one of the greatest gifts of my education and I try to keep it up, currently translating Plato's Phaedrus. Anaximenes was a pre-socratic philosopher. I like to read philosophy before there was a tradition to worry about.
Another gift was a fine introduction to Derrida et al. I suppose I enjoy JD for the same reason I do the pre-socrats, finding a thoughtful place outside the traditional.
Above all I enjoy a good conversation, well that and good sex.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
