Hi Friends!
Glad to see you weren't all out there doing worthy things and making me feel guilty.
Websailor was right , I just needed that little buzz of adrenalin that kicks in when you are almost late - and then a speedy rush around until everything is done.
I have to say that although I was delayed a whole week, the flight was great! I got upgraded to extra legroom, and had a whole row of seats to myself, so fell asleep in comfort.
Anyway, I am back safely, and will now return to my normal state, which is high level 'Is that essential? Can it wait?' or sometimes just general denial.
. . . waits for paulh to say something witty about other Generals he has known along with General de Nial. Or maybe not, in keeping with the thread. . .

There was a question in post 16. I'll post something witty if I get around to it. I can't afford any round to its, but maybe someone will lend me one.

I defer not to be drawn in to this and will try dilatoriness instead

Its about 28degrees C or 85F (for Shagbark) and windy today.
Just before starvation finally won I succumbed . . . and no you can't order it in - well maybe pizzas have arrived here, but even I don't think I can survive on pizzas.
I have a fridge half full of interesting Spanish things, such as goats cheese and chorizo and smoked salmon and cava! Hooray! Have to celebrate tonight cos my lovely neighbour is finally making it back here.
Must fill the other half of the fridge sometime . . .or not
were any of those things the answer to your unasked question paulh?

It's ironic isn't it? I was going to study Spanish volcanos and an Icelandic volcano prevented me from doing so
I still think it was unfair that it didn't wait for a week and grounded me on Lanzarote for a handful of days instead
Oh well, maybe it will next time I try

It was a to say the very least!
for Pierce...
I have to ask, why, when the aircraft fly through sand storms and so on ( half of which is old volcano dust from round here, week in and week out - why their engines aren't damaged. I only just got round to thinking this as I fastened my seat belt for landing yesterday

It's to do with the density of the cloud and the qualities of the dust in it in that sort of density. I think it's like that fine dirt that clogs everything rather than a nice coarse sand, like glass powder... Mix it with high temperatures and so on and it all gets a bit messy.
Something like that. I keep meaning to look it up properly. In fact, my best friend goes out with the brother of an aircraft technician. I should probably ask him. If I get around to it.

the sand round your way is volcanic rock that has been erroded off a big block of the stuff that cooled from lava
the ash is fine gas filled particles of cooled lava, like pumice
they have different properties, the ash melts in the engine of a jet and forms a glass bead with then sticks to the inside of the engine, enough of this and the inside of the engine bocomes coated in glass and fouls up
