I tried in vain to get my Mom to go wading in the swimming pool after her stroke to help rebuild the coordination she'd lost, with her Doctor's endorsement on the help the bouyancy would provide her.
She's never learned to swim and refused to take the chance.
Wasn't persuaded by the point I'm a card carrying, qualified, life guard and would have been giving her my undivided attention.
Swimming (mis)adventures.
The first time I swam a mile, I was affected by 'swimmer's lock', a condition I'd not been warned about and wasn't prepared for.
When I returned to shore and put my feet down, thinking to walk the rest of the way, I found, standing in neck deep water, that I couldn't move, except to blink my eyelids.
This lasted about fifteen minutes and was rather frightening, despite the fact I was in a fresh water inland lake withno tides to worry about.
There were no cramps, no pain of any kind, I simply could not move.
The next time a swam a mile, the following day, I had the same experience, but this time it lasted only a minute or so and since, I've had no further trouble, though on long distance swims at sea I've gotten out of sight of land.
Iliff David Richardson relates a similar experience in the book "An American Guerilla In The Philipines", when a boat he and a number of other American troops were using to attempt to escape from the Philipines during the Japanese invasion of WWII.
He and one of the other sailors aboard swam 20 miles back to shore to get help for the remaining men still clinging to the boat and found that they went into 'swimmer's lock' when they put their feet down in neck deep water thinking to wade the rest of the way in.
This was for them an extremely serious problem, since the tide was coming in.
Fortunately they were spotted and rescued by some Phillpino fishermen, who then went on to rescue the remaining men still stranded on the capsized boat.
I frankly haven't the foggiest idea what causes the problem, but it is something to be alert for.

I never heard about this either, nor did I ever experience it myself. Thanks for the heads up - erm, bad choice of words, I guess
well, you know what I mean

Don't worry Prof, you have to try a lot of shoes before you find one that fits and he will get there eventually. Better to take a while than make a mistake.
