What do I have to do with this?

This has come up on my list of entries, and my name is on the list of researchers, but I've never heard of it? Did I contribute without realising? Or is it a mistake?

Same here. My name is on it and I've no idea even where Lincolnshire is! Who wrote the entry?

You can always remove your name by clicking on the Remove My Name link in the right margin. It will give an error message, but it does actually remove you.

I see that it was Galaxy Babe that wrote it. Why did you add all these researchers to the author list, Galaxy Babe?

Elentari Posted Oct 21, 2005
I won't remove my name until I know what's going on.
I'm not objecting to getting credit if I actually contributred something, but I'm almost certain I did not, so it would be unfair to claim credit.

Sorry, this is an entry I'm putting together after volunteering at the front page.
I have added everyone I have taken information from, or linked to their entries (even editors of entries, because they did work too).
If you can't recognize your work, or your entry, then by all means remove yourself from the entry.
I am sorry if I upset anyone, I really can't go through the whole entry to find out why I added you, I was just erring on the safe side as I have used so much of other people's work.
Galaxy Babe (in Hallowe'en disguise)
P.S. Lincolnshire is where I live, so it's important to me!

I'm not upset, just curious.
I'm happy to remain on the entry if you like, even though my only contribution has been an entry you linked to (as far as I can tell, since I wasn't in the convo or anything), if you're happy to leave me on.
If you'd rather take me off, that's fine too!

Absolutely not!
Thanks, I'm keeping you on, and your entries are fascinating.
I can't believe how much I've learned about my own county just from starting this entry
I have to visit Spalding at night. Possibly next Spring.

I didn't realise you'd written quite so many entries. Do you have the 25 edited entries badge? (I want one, I'm on 16 solo edited entries at the mo, but I have 1 pending and 5 in PR so I'm getting there..,)
It's got to be a boost to the ego having your entry mentioned in the Times!

Yes, I got the badge when they first came out (it's on my PS, under the volunteer badges). I have 34 solo edited entries, 3 pending, and 6 in PR. I have a couple ready to go into PR, but there's such a backlog that I'm holding back until all my entries have been picked.
Well done on your 16, with 6 on the way you won't be long getting your badge!
Make sure you apply here: A709120 so you get put here: A4959417

It certainly upsets me that you've added authors just because you've linked to their entries. That isn't the point of authors at all! I'm removing myself, and I really think you should remove all the rest yourself - it's ridiculous!
What do I have to do with this?
Galaxy Babe - eclectic editor Posted Oct 21, 2005
But I'm using their work? This is supposed to be a contributing entry, I couldn't do this entry alone!
I'm not removing anyone. I might get accused of stealing material!
If you're upset then I apologize. If anyone else doesn't want to be credited as contributing researcher it's a simple process to remove themselves from the entry.

Putting a link to someone's work is not using their work. That's the basic principle on which the WWW operates.

Well I will give you an example of what I mean. There is an entry on a town in Lincolnshire currently languishing in PR, and the author isn't around. I've taken a great deal of what he wrote, and added him as contributing researcher.
When entries are edited and they have multiple contributors, how am I supposed to know who "wrote" it and who "edited" it? (other than the sub-ed)
I have done too much to go through it all and remove names. I'd rather err on the side of caution as I don't want to be accused of using others' work and not giving them credit.

Hmm... I've been thinking about this, Galaxy Babe, and I hope you won't be offended if I change my mind and take myself off. I'm not annoyed at being added or anything, and I understand your reasons for doing so; I just feel like a bit of a fraud being credited for an entry I didn't contribute anything to.
No hard feelings? It's just me.
Let me know when this goes into PR and I'll post some comments!

I was curious about this, because I saw Frogbit on the list, and I know he hasn't been around for years. (I miss him--he was wonderfully knwoledgeable and interesting about fossils and geology, and wrote some very quirky and individual entries.) It looks to me as if he's on the list because you link to his ammonites entry, while NAITA is there because you link to their Norway entry. Information you link to is not a part of your entry, so adding these authors confuses everybody, and devalues the work of people who *have* contributed to the entry itself. If everyone did this, the only solo entries would be ones without any links!
