What's Wrong With Americans

Actually a real world cup of baseball could be very very interesting. If professional players were allowed (that is if Major League Baseball Inc. were to remove its collective head from its fundement) the U.S. would be favored, but hardly a lock to win. Cuba, Japan, Dominica, Mexico, Venezuala, South Korea would all field strong teams and even Canada, Taiwan and Australia would stand an outside chance. Obviously the designated hitter rule would have to go, and international rules would have to be standardized.

I had a look at post 3327 and at the post it was replying to. The key is the word 'Only'. You asked if I would reconsider my stance that the US acts 'only' to protect its access to oil - and the answer is, I never said it did *only* that! It acts from other motives too, sometimes at the same time! No, it's all a matter of one word, Tacsatduck

From what I heard on the world service the answers are:
No, there wasn't a firefight (although there had been earlier.)
No, it wasn't dark, it was daylight.
No, he wasn't on his own. He and the rest of his team had asked for permission to film, and been given limited permission to go some distance away from the event they were interested in. The '50 yard' figure came from a BBC WS interview with the head of Reuters in New York, who is *fuming* as you can understand.

From one of those links:
"There were many journalists around. They knew we were journalists. This was not an accident," Abbas said.
That, to me, is the guts of the matter!
Is there anything in the guy having been Palestinian and 'looking Arab' do you think? As Iraqis are not Arabs, and look pretty much like Mazen Dana looked - interesting!

You are probably rushing when you're on here, so I forgive, but your statement was incomprehensible - that's why I didn't respond!

Speaking of bizarre thought I would stop in and say hi. Have been a little under the weather so have not been on much last month or so.
However i am on the mend and will soon be back to my thoroughly unpleasant self soon

Not sure if this the appropriate forum for this or not, but has anyone else been following the Fox News vs. Al Franken bunfight in the US?
Franken, a former Saturday Night Live writer and satirist well-known for attacking the conservative right in the US ('Rush Limbaugh is a big fat idiot' is one of his more recent works), has recently published a book titled 'Lies and the Lying Liars who tell them-a fair and balanced look at the right'. Fox News is suing him for copyright infringement because they have copyrighted the phrase 'fair and balanced'
Fox and several of its talking heads are attacked in the book for their hypocrisy and total conservative bias. A recent dust up between Franken and Fox commentator Bill O'Reilly occured during a panel discussion at a booksellers conference in the U.S.
Franken spoke last and during his very funny speech took O'Reilly to task for having claimed to have won a peabody award for a tabloid TV show he used to host called 'a current affair' when in fact he had never won such an award.
Video of the clash can be seen here
http://www.booktv.org/misc/BookExpo_053103.asp
It is a 90 minute clip but if you skip ahead to about 40 minutes in, you can see the last bit of Franken's remarks and O'Reilly's 'rebuttal'
If you go back and watch more of the first 40 minutes there are some things to think about. Like why the FCC got rid of its fairness doctrine a few years ago that required stations to give equal time to opposing points of view and paved the way for the people like O'Reilly, Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh and an overwhelmingly partisan 'news' network like Fox.

I will have to wait until I get home to view it, but I can't wait!
I like Al Franken. I like the bit about suing because he used "fair and balanced", as though Fox could EVER be considered "Fair and balanced". I think I should sue because I am considered an "over 40 Fox" and claim the word "fox" as a result. I could get billions!!!!

I've heard about this stoush - it's hilarious! They *own* the phrase fair and balanced? It's like the news item I heard on my local pop station this morning, which shall remain nameless to spare their embarassment who said that Rupert Murdoch owns the BBC! Surely, they meant ABC!

The first bit of comedy for the morning
A researcher here made a comment I like. When a conservative publication says "from a variety of sources". What it means is "from many conservative sources"
That's not exact but almost

Yes, Fox copyrighting 'fair and balanced' is sort like the Klu Klux Klan copyrighting 'black is beautiful' or the Nazi adopting 'Shalom' as their motto

I watched the Al Franken thing, or as much of it as I could bear.... I am someone who hates watching train wrecks. Frankly, Bill O'Reilly gives me a pain in the... well, you know....
The fact is, if you accuse others of being liars and you lie (ie either knowingly, or mis-speak and don't own up to it), you can't complain when others call you on it.
Key: Complain about this post
