Ziggy Stardust was one of the two albums I bought on pre-recorded cassette, so sequential listening was the only sane possibility. I used to keep it in the car though, so the starting point was always a bit random.

Does everyone find that album tracks are always surrounded by the ghosts of the tracks on the compilation you first heard them on? it is one of the annoyances of 'greatest hits' releases, that the context or sequence is lost, even where the original neighbours were quite unconnected.

Art is all about context.

2legs - Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side...

Re Joes garage, I dunno how I forgot that smiley - dohsmiley - huh I never could trace acts two and three on vinyl to go with the first, but then I got the double CD with all three on smiley - weird

Actually talking of just* listenign to the album all teh way though, its been years since I last listened to all of Zappas albums, Chronologically back to back from CD... It took several days last time I did it smiley - erm Not quite sure I've got all 87 or whatever it is but I can't be far off now smiley - dohsmiley - blush The boxed set of shut up and play your guitar works kinda strangely if I listen to all the LPs in sequence err which I'm not sure I can do... anyone seen where my vinyl is? smiley - runsmiley - yikes

and, remembering compulation tapes, and songs that then sound out of order, when not in the same order as a home-made compolation casette, a simular thing for me, happens with Beatles Lucy in the sky; which just doesn't sound right, whenver I hear it; my vinyl copy, with the strange repeated sequences and judders in the track, has just gotten ingrained into my mind "in the sky, in the sky in the sky, in the sky, in the sky in the diamons! as the record was quite scratched by the time it got to me smiley - doh

I'm the same with Then There Were Three, 2legs, if I play my CD i can't get over the lack of scratch halfway through the 3rd track

That's probably half the reason I prefer vinyl to CD for the most part - the songs sound more the way I remember them being, little skips and clicks and all. In fact, I did my radio internship in a college station which broadcast a mono FM signal, and sometimes I dig out the old reel-to-reel machine so I can listen to the tunes in mono the way I used to when I was in the booth. smiley - silly

Exactly the reason why I replaced - or perhaps am STILL replacing my vinyl with CDs.

Hate vinyl and would happily never see it again. In fact only today I have had Broken Barricades by Procol Harum arrive in the post. I've been striving to reach a happy place with my task and I'm nearly 30 years into the job. I may not replace my Status Quo albums.

I can't be the only person who, on hearing the end of "Bohemian Rhapsody", immediately expects to hear the opening thumps of "Another One Bites The Dust".

Or for that matter the opening of "We Are The Champions" immediately after the rather sudden ending to "We Will Rock You".

Both of those transitions are so thoroughly ingrained it's hard to imagine the tracks concerned in their original contexts...

"I imagine everyone has this: Abraxas - Santana" [Rudest Elf]

A friend recommended Abraxas, but I got the "Santana's greatest hits" CD instead. Why? Because there are zillions of pop artists and groups out there, and I'm not made of money. I have about 160 of the ones who seem to matter the most, in "Best of" or "Greatest hits" compilations. Since I wanted to ocver the whole 20th Century, I also have the jazz greats, the big bands, the greatest country music stars, themid-century crooners [Crosby, Sinatra, Perry Como, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis, Jr, etc.] and some humor CDs. There are a few pop stars that I can't stand [Tom Pettt, Michael Bolton, prince] so I had to skip ythem despite their general popularity. There are plenty that I do like, so I dont think the gaps matter that much.
