I'm now wondering if there is a place where wondering horses get lured to for 'a good time' and then get tortured to death for the sadistic pleasure of various gangsters (a la The Hostel).

Where is this huge horse knackers yard that seems to be supplying half of the meat mountain of Europe?
I notice more cows around than horses I have to say - surely it is more plentiful... smiley - erm

Before I gave up on meat I did eat a horse sausage in France - but as it was a French sausage* I have know idea what horse taste like.

* If you have never tried one they are like used condoms packed with bits of rancid gristle and dried toad skins, only worse.

Been reading a bit in the French press about the lasagne fiasco...

What's marked me most is that they are making out this is a UK problem, and either glossing over or ignoring completely the fact that the lasagne in question was made by a French company who are a massive supplier to the French frozen food market.

I still say Alpo dog food (compounded largely of horse meat) marinated overnight in chili salsa ain't half bad - but by the time you go to all that trouble and expense, you might as well buy corned beef hash in the first place.smiley - smiley

The scale of outrage about horse-in-burger or prison-halal-pork is disproportionate. It's not as if we can get CGD or e-coli from eating a perfectly wholesome* but incorrectly labelled foodstuff.

*although I've heard there is concern about the potential state of the horse meat.

...quite reasonable concern in an unregulated black market.

Also. standards for pet food are not on a par with those for human foodstuffs.

Apparently B&Q floor covering has been drawn into the food scandal.

Hmmm I'm not really sure the outrage is disproportionate any longer.

Do you think a company that Is prepared to be fraudulent regarding the content of their minced meat products is acting and complying fully with hygiene regulations?

There are clearly some very serious concerns here.

I'm surprised we haven't had some major smugness from the vegetarian brigade. Or maybe I haven't been looking in the right places.

Horse maet itself in the food is not the main issue; main issue is due to potential carry over of drugs given to horse into the human food chain.

Veggie where I work had a lighthearted chortle this morning...fell on deaf ears as I've no problem with it...I shop at Waitrose where the horse is free-range...

I though Findus were Swedish? Besides which France does not attach arbitrary social stigma to eating horse like what we do so it's understandable that their attitude would be different.

You don't need to be vegetarian to be smug about not eating processed meat.
