What's the betting that John Terry is on the podium at the end anyway?

Team GB and the Paralympians wan the team award, with no big surprise.
Wiggins won, with Ennis the runner-up. Murray was 3rd, and despite not being in the studio, had someone on hand to present him with the trophy (how? Is the phone vote not live? Do the BBC really have a tardis so that they could work out who would come 1st 2nd and 3rd and prepare for the presentations accordingly? And since McIlroy wasn't even available for a video link, did he know he was out of the running?)

I would probably have more respect for the result if the winner was decided by a panel of experts. You can't rely on good old Joe public to make an informed choice - they will just vote for the one they fancy.

That point gets brought up virtually every year...
The stock answer is that they have replica trophies and someone to give them out sent out to each of the people on the shortlist who aren't in the studio...

My only experience of awards shows was the Oliviers for theatre shows. The year our show won we all knew a month beforehand but were sworn to secrecy.

Well I voted for Wiggo so am quite pleased with the result. I'm not sure why they bothered with runner up and 3rd place. Both Ennis and Murray looked distinctly underwhelmed with these and the presentations were quite embarrassing.
I wanted a Masterchef-the Professionals like outcome really.
Both Murray and Wiggins did something truly historic in British sport this year and for me it should have been an honourable draw (which is what happened in Masterchef last week )
In the end though, cycling has been way ahead of the pack in just about everything this year so I guess it's not surprising. I was mildly surprised that team Sky didn't win the team award. giving it to 'Team GB at the olypics/paralympics was almost tantamount to noone wining it really for me. Too much of a broad church and within team GB there was some notable lack of success this time around. Swimming anyone?

I agree. Who wants to come second in a popularity contest? It's a real kick in the teeth.
Like all awards ceremonies, this is a promotional exercise. In this case, they're promoting BBC Sport - possibly the Beeb's only business unit which isn't currently being investigated by the police.
