Where have all the squirrels gone?
ITIWBS Posted May 13, 2012
I've always admired them for their ability to work simple latches, on food safes and refrigerators and suchlike.
Very few non-simian animals can.

"a rain of squirrels is unlikely unless they're sucked up into a hail storm formation by a tornado" [ITIWBS]
That kind of rain is unlikely, but large numbers of squirrels might jump down from trees. If they startle you, you might well think it's raining squirrels.

Training squirrels you say?
I think they'd make excellent pickpockets

My brother tells a story of how he was walking across the park and came across 2 squirrels.
Doing their bit of natures mustsay no more.
Seems Mr Squirrel wasn’t too happy being watched.Bro said,Mr Squirrel stopped being a love machine and started to chase him away
Only when my brother had managed to circumnavigate his way around Mrs Squirrel, was far enough away, was Mr Squirrel happy and got back to the job in hand

Don’t know about squirrels but we’ve got another rat living in next doors compost heap.
We had one a few weeks ago before Splodge our sent “Ratbag” (That’s what the girlfriendcall it) on its way to .
Wonder how long this rat will survive

Probably Splodge serving notice.
I had a cat like that once.
She wouldn't eat the rats she killed, just killed them and left them as a warning for others.
On the rabbits, their outlook is conditioned by the desert.
In the Perris Valley, just a hundred miles away on the seaward side of the Santa Rosa Mts., I found a row of giant chollas in flowerpots made an effective barrier against rabbits, there as here, the same species, the desert hare.
Here, the rabbits will chew the cacti to the ground for the moisture they contain.
Also, the cacti the rabbit is attacking at the moment are short spined varieties.
I've put up some temporary wire barriers.
I've got a "bring them back alive" type trap I may try next, but I may end up catching merely a feral cat.

You also have a ground-dwelling species of squirrel, don't you?

This little devil is the local squirrel.
It looks superficially like a chipmunk and is about the same size as a chipmunk, but it is a squirrel.

This is the prevalent kind over most of California, from the coastal plain in San Diego County to the dune grass prairie of the Central Coast, where they have their largest population (where once the grizzly bear roamed), to the open oak forests of northern California.
They are burrowing animals over most of their range, but I have seen them taking up an arboreal habit in northern California.

Another one bites the dust, the girlfriend was only asking the other morning, whilst we had ourin the conservatory
(she fond of watching the fly in and out of their nest box on the garage wall) , as to whether I had seen “Ratbag” No2.
Good luck with your cacti ITIWBS, lets hope your don’t come armed with wire cutters

I think you have a different species where you live, Happynerd. I don't want to see a war between species....
