Only if there's leather involved, but no silly hats.

Unlike children, we adults have vast stores of allusions to play around with. I see the "bonfire" and think about the book "Bonfire of the Vanities," with its almost contemporary message as well as the Savonarola implications. To me, the message is that there are some paths you don't want to go down. Sooner or later, someone is tied to a stake, figuratively or otherwise.
I just read a review of the musical "Little Shop of Horrors," with allusions to the MacBeth story. In this thread, we're talking about adults who still read literature aimed at children or teens, but we've barely scratched the surface where allusions to classics are concerned. You're riding the subwat, and you see an adult reading a superhero comic book or graphic novel. Maybe the adult is thinking of the Nietzschean or Faustian implications of the comic book. You don't know that he/she isn't, do you?

[I meant subway, not subwat. I am hoping that there is no such word as subwat. I would be very if it meant something nasty. ]

I think we all remain kids at heart; there is no shame in getting enjoyment from written material that was written to target a younger audience.
It is inevitable that if a book is written by an older person then the humour or content still attains an adult edge, although its target audience is younger.
Some would describe that as subtle humour, intentional, maybe not, appreciated by the younger audience, probably not, picked up by us oldies, yes..

Actually, everybody expected the Spanish Inquisition. They gave 30 days notice.

I read somewhere that the secret to staying happy in old age is never acting your age. If you think of yourself as a young person regardless of what the calendar tells you, you won't feel old.

Well now paulh, there's truth in that - some truth.
What it doesn't have the courage to tell you of, is the everyday reminders...

There’s nothing better than when your at a partyyou pluck up courage to do a spot of Dad Dancing, you know the one , where you try to do those moves you did 30 odd years ago.
That’s being well young at , that is, and those photos the day after are pure classic magic

Ooh, paulh, have you read 'Return to the Hundred Acre Wood' by David Benedictus? I'm sure you'd love it. I do. I bought it for my nephew, he loves it being read to him by me.

I heard about it, and wanted to read it. Trouble is, I always more books to read than I can get to. I'll see if I can get that book. Sounds like fun!

Went shopping yesterday, not the best of experiences presently given the state of my back, any way, when I was at the counter with my girlfriend, the assistant ed at all the sweeties I had(made me feel quite childish), I told her it was my little goody bag, that I take to bed with me and nibble on whilst watching TV and drinking my night cap

The assistant might have just been trying to be pleasant. Humor often puts people at ease.
But I know what you mean about having something to gnaw on at night. I eat peanuts and whole-wheat crackers.
I also read contemporary detective stories, most of them featuring amateur detectives who run bakeries or catering businesses. There are usually recipes for cookies or cakes. Sometimes the victims are murdered while eating .

“I eat peanuts and whole-wheat crackers”, do you sleep with the windows open, as I know what would be happening if I ate that lot at bed time

My windows aren't open yet, but they will be within the next month. I don't have air conditioning in my house.
