Unlike children, we adults have vast stores of allusions to play around with. I see the "bonfire" and think about the book "Bonfire of the Vanities," with its almost contemporary message as well as the Savonarola implications. To me, the message is that there are some paths you don't want to go down. Sooner or later, someone is tied to a stake, figuratively or otherwise.

I just read a review of the musical "Little Shop of Horrors," with allusions to the MacBeth story. In this thread, we're talking about adults who still read literature aimed at children or teens, but we've barely scratched the surface where allusions to classics are concerned. You're riding the subwat, and you see an adult reading a superhero comic book or graphic novel. Maybe the adult is thinking of the Nietzschean or Faustian implications of the comic book. You don't know that he/she isn't, do you?

[I meant subway, not subwat. I am hoping that there is no such word as subwat. I would be very smiley - blush if it meant something nasty. smiley - yikes]

I thinksmiley - eurekasmiley - winkeye we all remain kids at heart; there is no shamesmiley - blush in getting enjoyment from writtensmiley - biro material that was written to target a younger audience.
It is inevitable that if a book is written by an oldersmiley - senior person then the humoursmiley - laugh or content still attains an adult edge, although its target audience is younger.
Somesmiley - erm would describe that as subtle humour, intentionalsmiley - doh, maybe not, appreciated by the younger audience, probably notsmiley - sadface, picked up by us oldies, yessmiley - laugh..

I read somewhere that the secret to staying happy in old age is never acting your age. If you think of yourself as a young person regardless of what the calendar tells you, you won't feel old.

Well now paulh, there's truth in that - some truth.
What it doesn't have the courage to tell you of, is the everyday reminders...

The assistant might have just been trying to be pleasant. Humor often puts people at ease.

But I know what you mean about having something to gnaw on at night. I eat peanuts and whole-wheat crackers.

I also read contemporary detective stories, most of them featuring amateur detectives who run bakeries or catering businesses. There are usually recipes for cookies or cakes. Sometimes the victims are murdered while eating smiley - yikes.

My windows aren't open yet, but they will be within the next month. I don't have air conditioning in my house.
