If you could choose just one painting from the great galleries

That's great to know.
smiley - ta
I tried it with the image from an early
Leonard Cohen album because at some point
over the years I encountered the original
image of the lady in chains and discovered
it was a relatively famous painting and not
created for the album cover - but I could
never recall who it was by or find it again.

Anyway I tried copying and pasting the album
cover art into the google search bar under
images and yes it works, I got a gazillion
matches of the album artwork but not the
original painting I'm seeking.

Obviously the flames and text on the cover do
obscure the image as it was originally so I
doubt that I will find it even if I go through
the entire list of google results.

Any suggestions from someone who knows this art
would be appreciated. It's been bugging me for years.

smiley - cheers

The note on the picture here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songs_of_Leonard_Cohen leads me to believe that it is a piece of touristy religious art Cohen picked up on his travels. It might be nearly impossible to trace the artist as it may well have come from a painting factory of some sort.smiley - erm

Thank you anhaga!
That is quite satisfying to know.

And when I tried pasting that image
into Google search it gave me a shedload
of information about its origins and uses.

It even appears in Final Fantasy X.
And I found a two-fisted version:

Anima Sola!
I'll remember that.
And I owe you another one.

Mol - on the new tablet

Thing is, if I'd had the picture saved on my computer, I would have called the file something along the lines of 'Richard Dadd desert pic'. So identifying it would have been fairly easy smiley - biggrin

Like Still Incognitas I am a rabid pre-Raphaelite fan and have Leighton's Flaming June (obviously not the original - but would sell my soul for it) in my living room.

And would love to have Millais' Ophelia too.

Like Hoo, I like Dadd but have an unhealthy (professional) interest in him. Most of his work was done in Broadmoor or Bethlem hospitals after he had stabbed his father to death thinking that he was the Devil. An early example of a mentally disordered offender being diverted into treatment rather than facing the normal penalty for a crime which in his case would almost certainly have been hanging.

Glad you like the thread Mr. PP.

Yes Dadd was the daddy (pun intended) of them all of 'outsider artists' - almost certainly suffering from what we'd call, 'paranoid schizophrenia'...a form anyway.

That painting has always made me feel quite ill...

I was just thinking I'm (perversely, perhaps) quite fond of Falero's works, particularly his Vision of Faust: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a7/Falero_Luis_Ricardo_Vision_of_Faust_1878.jpg

Effers;England.

I had the pleasure today whilst looking through a pile of stuff to discover a post card I bought at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. A Rembrandt. I spent good long time staring at that ruff.

And there always so much love and humanity in his 'faces'.
