h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

I think I'd go insane were the interwebs to suddenly go back to dial-up speed... But I was conjugating as I waited for my PC to boot up, filing my nails whilst I waited, which things people used to do during the wait time for web-pages to load, in the dial-up days... there must have been so much useful stuff done in the gaps between pages loading, which, I guess, now, just doesn't get done...

So what did you used to do whilst you waited for the page to load in the dial-up era?

Dunno about dial-up, but my morning routine is:

Shuffle out of bedroom avoiding cats lying in ambush,
Switch on PC,
Tiptoe through the weaving pussies to the kitchen, put the kettle on,
Reassure cats I'll be back in a minute as I nip to the loo,
Try not to pee on Edgar's head as he jumps up on the toilet seat,
Wash hands, feed cats, make coffee
Return to PC just as it's finished booting up.

That just sounds like a bad acid trip...

Didn't the weaving pussies have a top 40 hit in the UK, oo, in about the last half of the 60's? Can't for the life of me remember what it was called.... Something about stroking cats I seem to remember...

Yeah, I've got a hungry cat to deal with in the morning too, swl. I'm absolutely awful in mornings and one of the worst jobs having to deal with is the mess in the cat litter. I know I can't leave it because if I do and the cat uses the litter tray she'll tread something nasty over the floor.

Anyhow, I used to like the sound of dial up. If I ever hear it now I always have a flashback to the "good ol' days" of late 90s and early 00s when the internet was all novel.

What did I do when page was loading? Gotta be honest about that one - swore at the computer!

Ahhh! yes!! Now I remember the swearing! fantastic! not had a good swear at my PC in ages... its clearly working too well...
*gets hammer*

Set all the pages off loading at once, open links in new windows, so usually while one was loading I had a load of others. If I were on h2g2 of course I'd spend my time clicking on buttons in frustration. Nothing useful I'm afraid.

Probably the nearest I can come is when I used to wash up while waiting for 'free' internet time to start, then set the thing to connect while I finished wiping tables etc.

Oh the days when I used to wash up every day, after dinner. Long gone I'm afraid.

I still actually do have dial-up. I play computer solitaire while it loads. I'm addicted to Freecell. In my first two years of computer ownership, I played 20,000 games.
