Tut tut, guys! Yeah - shit happens. But security should be better. Please learn from this. It is not acceptable simply to say you are contacting an individual to sort out their account.

The thread was closed to stop the person's RL name being continually repeated.

The matter has been sorted out.

And I'm assuming that 'sorted out' means 'everyone has been reminded of the importance of installing proper security.'

It would be good if we could all be informed what actually happened, and totally re-assured it won't happen again.

I saw that other thread and there was no proper explanation. Just something entitled, 'Bleh'.

Kind of agree. I'm sure there's no actual problem - but it would be good PR. When a problem happens, the formula might be something like...

OK - something happened.

No kittens died.

Here's what we've done to make sure it doesn't happen again.

It has nothing to do with h2g2. The problem was created outside of this site

OK. I assumed that. But the original thread gave the impression that Researchers may be getting spambot e-mails. If it's not a problem and never was a problem, now we know.

Now.

Asteroid Lil posted the exact same thing as lil in the original thread three minutes before this thread was started.

I only understand it now.

It wasn't clear to me from the other thread.

Not all of us are as genned up on this stuff, but we have friends who have been hacked for unknown reasons.

All it needs is a very straightforward communication that even the most ungeeky of us can understand, to be put out clearly in plain English as an announcement somewhere.

I get so fed up with this assumption that we are all geeks.

Ah. Yes. Saw that.

But you see my point? This kind of thing needn't be an issue. Procdures. Tighten. Next time could be worse.

No answer could be given at the time the thread was being closed. Things had to be checked first, obviously.

Now, I am getting tired. I hope you will both be satisfied that your accounts in h2g2 are safe, and always have been.

I have at least two friends in real life who have been hacked...and people online have mentioned it..so its hardly surprising that simple plain communication of information is the best way to nip any anxieties in the bud I would have thought.

I don't take stuff like this on trust. I like *facts*. Weird isn't it for someone on h2g2 to like factual information?

But unsub...or I'll be on another 'punishment' for argumentativeness.
