Has Rock Become Meaningless?
Rudest Elf Posted Jun 30, 2011
I remember having the Marshall Tucker Band album sometime before I went to live in Australia (late 1974) - couldn't take much music with me in those days, of course. Sure like 'Sweet Home Alabama', although I have no idea about their latest stuff. What's the album called?
While I was taking a link from YouTube for Sweet Home Alabama, I couldn't help noticing a song with the highest number of views I've ever seen**, a staggering 230,298,736!

You have very eclectic tastes Rudy!
The one consistent factor is in the quality
of musicianship and production values. That
little known Kim Carnes tune for example isn't
much of a song in its own right but the guitar
and sax solos are worth waiting for.

Yes, the solos and the compelling rythm.
I should probably explain this relentless exhibition of self-indulgence...
For now, I will just say that (apart from teasing Ed by showing examples of music he claims to abhor ) I have been trying to recall sounds from a record collection, some of which is stored more than 1,000 kilometres away, the rest (300 of the first albums I owned) were stolen because, in those days, I was naive enough to place my trust in 'the kindness of strangers' [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxGN29njs3Q ] - a long, sad story.
Anyway, it is clear from what I've posted to date that I don't think 'pop' music is trash. Whoever believes that it is should make clear their definition of pop music.
I have to say that I am disappointed that other researchers have not been prepared to stray off-topic by offering some of their own favourites.

My! What a backlog. Some OK stuff, others...less so. But within certain limits Im comfortable with that: It would be terrible if we all liked the same stuff and quite possibly some stuff that I think I dont like I simply havent Got yet*. Saul Goode.
But Im wondering...is all this stuff Rock? Or are we yet prepared to admit that what we call Rock (n Roll)/Pop is, in fact a fuzzy continuum in which categories elide into one another? I mean take Beefheart**, for example. *Definite* references to Doo-W*p and James Brown in there. This Rock (n Roll)/Pop thing is *meant* to be a mashup. Where would we be if Dylan, The Beatles and Brian Wilson werent ripping each other off all the time? (And all ripping off their African-American forebears).***
Youre right about Coldplay. The very mention of the bland soulsuckers throws me into a conniption fit. THAT'S NOT MUSIC!!!
* Although I *do* think Im experienced enough to speak authoritatively on the awfulness of Queen, Yes and Genesis. Misspent youth.
** It is my belief that Beefheart wasnt *trying* to make a difficult cacophony. To his gloriously demented ears, that shit sounded like Pop!
*** Did you hear about the Oasis tribute band? Ripped off all their material from The Bootleg Beatles. Fine. But in the early days at least, werent The Beatles a Little Richard Tribute act? Discuss. (And on Abbey Road, they were channeling The Band)

Doesn't work, Im afraid. My tastes are somewhat catholic and I abhor little (and only with good, properly argued reasons. ). All Im suggesting is that there isnt a Pop/Rock dichotomy...and even at the ends of the continuum its daft to say that one end is superior to the other. But you seem to affirm this vigorously with your own selection.
Ill need a little more convincing about George Benson, I have to say. And definitely about Sade. But, Hey - Im fine with that. De gustibus thingy wotsit.

"I'll need a little more convincing about George Benson, I have to say. And definitely about Sade."
I have no idea what you have against the very Miss Sade - one thing's for sure, I won't be attempting to convince you, and to my mind (and many millions of others), there is no need at all to defend the brilliant George Benson - I have a couple of tapes (somewhere) of his superb live performances.
"I'm wondering...is all this stuff Rock?"
Not at all - as explained in an earlier post, I happily admit to gross off-topicness.
"Where would we be if Dylan, The Beatles and Brian Wilson weren't ripping each other off all the time? (And all ripping off their African-American forebears)."
Surely, that's just the way of the world. Does it matter, anyway, if 'good' music is produced as a result?

I don't recall these been mentioned here before, But surely -
AC/DC - Back in Black,
Anything by Janis Joplin & god's gift to onanists (a big fat here) Tom Waits are timeless.
These should be exempted. That is all.
