Is there a universal sign language? Is the American sign language even different from the British? I have often wondered how, if at all, deaf people from different cultures communicate with all the different sign languages.

There are different sign languages. The North American one was developed in the early 19th Century, and according to Wikipedia, it's close to the French one.
I think both of those might have been influenced by the older sign language in North America - the one some tribes used for inter-language communication. French missionaries ran across Plains sign language in the 16th Century.
I imagine history accounts for the variety? I'll bet somebody knows more, and can enlighten us.

Take a look at today's doodle. The birthday of the hole punch. When I get to the office I'll tie a ribbon round mine to celebrate! Will post a link, too. A bit fiddly on this phone.

Photosynthesis is actually somewhat more complicated than suggested here.
The Oxygen is actually released from the water, hydrogens from water attached to the CO2, carrying away the oxygen from the CO2 when that is caramelized, chemical cycle established by studies with radioactive tracers.
In practice, in the total ecological cycle, oxygen is constantly moving between H2O and CO2.
