Hopefully the anonymous contributors with one-sentence Entries won't be plagiarizing. But if we can't get in touch with them, how will we discuss adding some more lines and making the existing one more original?

Premise one states
Wiki has gone way beyond us in those terms, and there is no gain to be had in pursuing them.
I disagree. Wiki is for people who want a jumping off place to see what they can find on a subject but it only accepts cited material.
Things like my article on the Sedgwick Geological Trail article
A593606 would never fit there because it is only my version of what I saw.

"Calling Elvis..."
After a while, just drop it. It's abandoned. No sense flogging the carcass.
Cheers!

>Donating money to h2g2 is not something that can buy you anything except possibly a shiny badge and a bit of street cred.<
Vip I really really hope badges, shiny or otherwise, aren't handed out for that

Seriously I think the Licence fee has been a divisive issue at times here. I've brought it up due to my frustration with the beeb at times, and its a *fact* that everyone knows about if you live in the UK, and this site is run by the beeb.
But I'd love us to put that behind us in future. If people want to donate that's just a personal decision, nothing to do with an announcement to the world with a badge.

Effers, I participated in NaNoWriMo November 2010, and was so pleased with my progress that I cheerfully put some money in the NaNoWriMo kitty. In acknowledgment for that donation, they put a little halo over my NaNoWriMo name.
Is that so wrong? If so, please explain exactly how and why.

Speaking personally I would cringe with embarrasement to have any sort of thing like that.
It's true I wear a poppy when I give to that every year. But I take that as a visible mark of respect for people who gave their lives in war for us..and yes also as a kind of advert for the British Legion to maybe get others thinking of giving.
I've seen other sites where people advertise they've donated which I suppose it a kind of advert.
It's just a personal thing. Hopefully we can make it an optional thing.

Maybe there could be a little button in the preferences to display the badge?

We have discussed accepting anonymous donations, so yes, the idea is that it would be optional.
I don't see it quite the same way, more of putting my money where my mouth is, but I see your point.

How about > Funded > controlled > ignored > restricted > overlooked > disposed of ???

It's just one doesn't do that sort of thing. It's a deeply personal thing - not to get some badge to tell the world you've given some money. Maybe its a British thing? I can't imagine anyone I know wanting it to be known if they've given money to a good cause.
And I do think it becomes divisive very easily. But if we make it optional, no-one will know if someone has given or not if they have no badge, so that would get around the divisiveness.
I don't even like the edited guide badges. It all smacks of Brownies or the Girl Guides to me.

Why ?
If you're proud, that's all that matters.
I'll shut up about all this now though.

No. I'm just being honest about my opinion. What the heck does it matter what my opinion is? I'm just one person here.

I've never been entirely comfortable with badges, but they are discreet. They only appear on someone's personal space (not, say, every time they post).
One thing the badges do which I approve of is to promote the edited guide - the reason why we're here.

Effers, I do not know you personally and as a principle I respect everyone regardles of their opinion or beliefs.
To me, personally, your opinion has as much value as anyone else's, mine included. I value your opinion on many things concerning h2g2 and I've read a good many of your opinions and thoughts that I can relate to and even agree with.
If you have a personal preference for not wanting the badge of support on your personal space, fine! It is your choice and I (and I think the lot of us) respect that.
I on the other hand do not care either way. If there is a badge that shows on my personal space that I sponsor h2g2 I'd like to show it and maybe another Researcher feels the drive to sponsor h2g2 as well because of it. If we don't get a badge I'm fine with that as well. This is my opinion.
Shall we end the discussion here and now?
It is a difference of opinion/point of view/preference and not something up for debate or trying to 'convert' the other.
Now we are clear on one thing: It IS important to make the button of support optional. If only for one of our fellow travellers.
Thanks all.
Cheers!
Martin

Yep I agree as to them promoting the EG, much as 'donation' badges would. I certainly agree with that argument. And really my EG remark was very much a side issue.
I do think the donation badges fall into a different category though, because not everyone can afford to donate or may even be uncertain as to whether they believe enough in nootoo to actually give money...and it maybe a cultural thing, even within your family, to not want it advertised.
Anyone can contribute to the Guide. So that's different.
Tav please don't let it spoil your pleasure in having an EG badge..it really is fairly minor for me.

They would be a bad thing if those with badges saw themselves as elite in any way. The idea was that money would never be an isue - it wouldn't give you more votes, more of a say, extra functionality. But some people are proud of supporting things openly, some are not, and a badge on a Space allows them to do that.
Don't worry, if there is a badge it will be entirely optional. And if it looks like it's polarising the Community in any way then the system needs a re-think.
Key: Complain about this post
