I just read an article on the series in SFX and it confirms that they've taken the characters and played with their relationships and such but tried to keep the central idea intact. They ahven't used the stories from the books I dont think. Essentially everyone who's involved with it is saying that to try and literally film the books wouldn't do them justice and would probably be an unmitigated siaster whereas writing new scenarios for the central (adapted and adjusted) characters would work well...

I'll watch. I'm not judging either way.

Gnomon - time to move on

So they're new stories about Dirk Gently, rather than ones written by Douglas Adams?

Icy North

It sounds like it.

As it was an ongoing project at the time of his death, that may not be such a bad thing. I see no reason why they couldn't include the two he's written, though. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I think it's becoming a bit fashionable to admit that what's written isn't always that filmable. Admit it, write something that is filmable and then get on with it.

I've only got half my brain on at the moment and am forgetting things but his significant other is now his best mate's girlfriend or sister or something. I can only assume that it allows for more external dialogue instead of internal or something...

Gnomon - time to move on

I suppose they've done that with other literary characters - The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes was a Billy Wilder story about the great detective rather than a Conan Doyle one. But usually they start by filming the original books.

Perhaps we could have a whole series of "Other stories about famous literary characters"?

Heathcliff - where he went and how he got rich
Bilbo - adventures among the elves
Luna Lovegood - her life as President of the United Nations
Jesus - What he was doing on the Road to Emmaus

Dirk's. Or was she his sister and she's now his mate's girlfriend.

In the books, Dirk didn't have any friends or relations, except for Richard who he hadn't seen since school.

They could make Miss Way (can't remember her first name) the lady in question. With Richard being the friend she now with.

My information retention is awful. I would apologise but I did warn you! I'll re-read the article if you like but i expect the story is on the magazine's website if you want to look...

I hope they keep the coelacanth reference in. And the i-ching calculator. I know I've used "a suffusion of yellow" on more than one occasion when trying to count up votes for h2g2 meet dates. I don't think many people realised where it came from though.

Gnomon, with regard to "Jesus - What he was doing on the Road to Emmaus", you might enjoy Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore. Quite funny.
