I don't want it offline. I want to be able to print to it, whenever I want to. Like now for instance. But it's saying its offline, and I can't see ANYWHERE to say 'never go offline' or 'go back online'.

How can I fix this? We're all wireless, I restarted my router and that didn't help, although when I've turned power off to the router for 10 secs that normally works. I got wireless so I *didn't* have to keep getting up or have all the equipment in one place.

I know it sounds like a simple question, but the tech-savvy amongst your potential audience will have framed a half dozen questions which need answering before it is even worth trying to guess what the answer may be to your original problem. So in order for us to determine whether your problem lies in our area of expertise, let us start with:

Name your operating system, at least roughly?
Is the printer connected wirelessly/wired via Ethernet/wired via USB to a computer (which then connects to your network somehow)?

Printers are all evil and should be exterminated.


The single most time-wasting piece of computer equipment* is the printer in all the offices I have ever worked in.
Abandon all hope - when they go wrong, they're a bloody nightmare.









*That's if you don't count gaming or net surfing obviously

So the printer is wireless too, and not physically connected to anything other than the mains?

Incidentally, what sort of printer is it? (We're using one printer that's at least 15 years old, but it still does the business).

Er, HP 3 in 1 I think, less than a year old.

Nothing is connected to anything other than leccy. All the information floats through the air.

At which point it goes outside my experience. I've no idea how to set that up, let alone how to fix it.

There must be *someone* on this y site...

I have no idea Mina. my only suggestions would be:

Is the printer on standby instead of ready?

Is the printer losing connectivity with the network?

I would assume the offline thing is a status not a setting

My printer (wired not wireless) has a power save thing, so it puts itself to sleep if it's not been used for a bit. Could that be it?

I suggest you get a large hammer (or, better still, an anvil), and pounce on your printer. That oughtta teach the badger a lesson.

Our printer at work goes to sleep, but it jolts itself awake when you ask it to print. It also goes off-line, but that's when someone's knocked the big green button on the top. Pushing said big green button sorts it out.

Sometimes I get so overwhelmed with how complicated technology can be that I miss the obvious in favour of assuming it must be something complicated. Don't suppose there's a big green button that will magically solve the problem?

At the very least this post will help keep the thread near the top of the convo list!

possibly it's the going to sleep thing that's messing it up - my netbook goes offline whenever it sleeps, and it drives me nutty.

(so, I have no help to give, and nothing to add, but the keepie-uppies seem like fun)

have you tried switching it off and on at the wall???

I don't know why you're asking me questions about why it's doing this, and is it because of that... I don't know! That's why I asked on Ask h2g2.

If I knew the answers to your questions I'd be able to sort it out. I don't think it's related to being asleep because most of the time it's fine, will wake up and print.

And yes, I've turned it off and on again, and it doesn't help. Only turning the router off and on again works.

sorry, mate of mine worked on a computer help desk and i know its a cliche, but, he told me 90% of the perceived problems of computer users could be resolved with the old switch it off and on at the wall

quite a few notice they can't switch it off because it already is

not that i'm implying.....of course

I can see lights glowing! Including the wireless one. It's really frustrating. Some days I can just wake it up and print what I like, and I don't know where to look to find out how to fix it, which is why I came on here to ask.
