Help! Help! I've been kidnapped by the 1970's
Deadangel - Still not dead, just! Started conversation Jun 21, 2010
I've recently (for my sins) taken to wearing a very 1970's looking suit I brought in a charity shop to work.
Today, I went into the same shop and brought a mixture of CD's, and as a consequence, am 'sitting' here, listening to disco tunes, and failing to avoid dacing along in my chair.
I was actually alive in the 1970's, and recall how horrible they actually were. What can I do to escape before I have to re-live the 1980's as welll?

The only thing to do is buy a medallian, otherwise the 1980's will be with you before you know it, and you'll just wish you were back in the 70's

I agree, grow some hedgelike sideburns too, and remember the 80s were much much worse.

I removed the superfluous apostrophe.

Penguin?
I spent a lot of the early norties combing Camden markets for 70's gear. Still got a couple of great skirts in my wardrobe. They'll never go out of fashion (they were never in...).

Mina : My wardrobe knows exactly what you mean.
Taff : it's Disco, so same era.
The thought of listening to the Bangles is getting more attractive as I type.
Maybe I shoutd Nuke myself from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

No No, stay in the 70's Dude when TV wasnt sanitised, the Sweeney caught some villains in a shed up at Heathrow, Starsky and Hutch roared about brilliantly (only the first season was good, the rest was undeniably undiluted pants) BUT also Global Village was the place to go.....those were the days, boppin' around to Plato's Retreat, East to West, Hi Tension and Love and Desire...........

The 70s were great if you were a kid.
Surely by doing the 70s at home you *are* successfully avoiding the 80s, which seem to be everywhere I look at the moment. Puffball skirts, leggings, Rick Astley, Conservative budget - and that's just what I'm experiencing *today*, and without even leaving the house.

I'm just putting the apostrophe back in because Mina herself mentioned '70's music', and if it's good enough for her...
I suppose it's important to clarify what's meant by 70's (or 70s) music. Deadangel implied ...but Taff mebtioned The Punk Revolution which blew all that away. Even more so...it blew away all that goddawful, noodly, up-it's-arse prog rock crap. Lest we forget! 'Those who refuse to learn the lessons of history are condemned to repeat them' etc. etc.
And what about Funk or (especially) Reggae. *That* was good 70's (or 70s) music!
The 80's (or 80s) are big these days. Those were my time even more than the 70s (or 70's). I really can't figure out the attraction there. *That* was a crap decade if ever there was one:
'Shite it was in that morn to be alive. To be young was very...dull.'
When people talk about 80's (or 80s) music...what do they understand by it? It seems to be stuff like Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet or Bowie-after-he-stopped-being-good. There *was* some decent music around...but that wasn't it.

Buy Nevermind, put on some comfortably worn jeans and a t-shirt, skip straight to the 90s and NEVER LOOK BACK.

nnn...Yes and no. I agree totally on the utter bodaciousness of 'Nevermind'. It rekindled Rock'n'Roll's roots, proving that, in godfather-of-grunge Neil Young's words There's more to the future than meets the eye .
However...you do have to Know Your Roots. If not, how can you possibly grasp that Coldplay, Keane, Snow Patrol, etc are simply WrongWrongWrong? But you don't have to get hung up on a decade: just skip back and forth, picking up on the Good Bits and discarding the dross.
That said...I've not been finding anything that's appealed to me lately. Either I'm getting hold or - Hey hey, my oh my - it's time for another revolution.

Nope, sorry, I'm listening to the Bangles now. What's scary is that it's their 2003 Album (which still sounds 80's), so I'm already 80's retro.
Now, can I drag myself backwards to the 90's, and listen to some Sheep on Drugs I wonder, or is it Pulp and Oasis all the way?
