Taliesin, I now understand the . That site's not terribly user-friendly. I thinl a specific 'Petition to name it Rupert' thread is called for, but I don;t feel sufficiently qualified to start it.

I think someone needs to create an entry putting forward good reasons (with a little humour of course) why this new planet should be called Rupert, then a number of us sign up, then the BBC picks it up, then the major news broadcasters of the world pick it up, then it happens
Right?
Right

Why don't we call it "New Planet" and invite Tony Blair of "New Labour" to be President. Send him and all the other politicians along to set things up for us and we'll be along later.
erm, I think I may have plagiarised that from somewhere

Come on peeps, leave LW alone, he harmless enough. I don't think I've seen him trying to deliberately wind people up. We've all seen much, much worse. Apples spring to mind, though I can't think why.

Alright fellow H2G2 Researchers. Let's start posting reasons why the new planet should be named 'Rupert'
We can edit later, right now we need quantity, but I suggest we attempt to avoid duplication
I think it should be called Rupert simply because it is so refreshingly zany, and the world needs more zany...
Anyone wish to begin?

To be fair, the thread has been going for several hours and we haven't yet had a series of consecutive posts copied out of the Bumper Book of Baby Names.

I'm surprised nobody has yet thought of calling it Nighthoover!

If we find intelligent life on Rupert, will we call them Ruperts? Because it's worth calling the planet Rupert just for that.

DNA42 or Milliways
I liked Bob because it is the same from both direction
If there is a big push and concensous from h2g2 I would go for Rupert or whatever
There may be 3 new planets.
All the maps will have to change!
Hmm... So would that affect astrologers charts?
Maybe having a BoB or Rupert rising on your chart will change predictions

Maybe it'll make the astrologers go out and get proper jobs. Probably not though.
Besides, they'll have seen this coming and made contingency plans. They knew about these planets all along but kept quiet to maintain an element of suspense.

I guess having a Rupert rising in your chart would give you a wild desire to bark at strangers and bury bones all over the place. Perhaps flea problems and ear canker. Lots of hair and unique ways to hassle people into going for walks. Hmmm. Interesting from the point of view of an astrologer.

I'll sign on for Rupert. I mean, how many other Roman gods are there to choose from? Are we going to have to settle for Proserpine? I think not!
It's only fitting that the new planet be called Rupert. It makes sense, more so than some random god pulled out of thin air, because it actually has a history and reasoning behind it. It's not just 'oh, let's call this planet 'Proserpine' because all the other ones are named after Roman gods', it actually has a point and a reason and a connection.
But if it is named Rupert, then years from now people will read Mostly Harmless and think DNA's Rupert was inspired by the real Rupert.
