on after thought the fix i made is made specifically for ubuntu so it won't work with fedora. Some people on irc have sent me some links but some of the commands do not work or some of the rpms are not compatible with my laptop

There may now be updated/working driver module for that Broadcom card, in most major distros

Some possibly helpful links: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43

http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php

If not, you can fall back on the ndiswrapper option, using the appropriate windows driver, remembering to blacklist the non-working Linux broadcom module, to prevent it from loading.

One of the problems with Linux is that there's a lot of old information out there explaining difficult ways to do things which can be done more easily with modern distros.

Oh yeah! That is really annoying. You can still find configuration information for Debian Woody, for example! That's why it's often better to search/ask on one of the active forums

I'm giving up for now...at least i got it installed. I will post on the fedora forums and if it doesn't work out I'll try Ubuntu. I don't really mind trying out different distros as long as I can figure out a fix for this. Having wifi is half the fun of having a new OS.

Pish.

It won't install. My master HDD is my XP boot. I'm trying to install on an empty slave. At first it wouldn't let me...until I went into the partition table, did nothing, then came back out again. Then it let me do a couple more steps and hit Install. After a while...it takes me back to where you select where you want to install it. And so on.

I've posted a question on the Forum. Meantime...any ideas?

as far as I know it has to be the master drive not the slave where it should be installed

No. You may install Linux on _any_ drive.

How are you setting your partitions? Do you intend to install grub? Do you know how to modify xp's nt bootloader to chainload grub? Or do you intend to install grub to the primary/master drive mbr?

Sorted!

I burned another disk at a slower speed and it went as smooth as a pornstar's pudenda. Strange - 'cause I'd checked the previous disk. Then later - smiley - doh - I remembered I had an official Jaunty disk with a magazine.

So anyway...here am I typing from Ubuntu. (Can you tell?). The first thing I did was to test the ordinary user suitability by trying to look at a YouTube vid. I have to say...I was disappointed. I'd got the impression that it would guide you through installing restricted formats. Well...I got to the Flash page, was offered a range of Lx options (and how the hell would I know which one I wanted?), then had to look up how to install...and then found out that it wasn't Flash I needed but Javascript. So I looked up how to enable Javascript (no explanation given)...and found the best way was to revert to Terminal. Sure - Terminal is extremely efficient...but really...if Ubuntu wants to attract 'Ordinary people'...they're not quite there yet. I reckon I'd have been struggling if I wasn't already up the learning curve.

That said...grabbing all the restricted formats is a lot easier than it used to be. So is device mounting.

Now...why can't I get gtk-gnutella to find anything?

S'looking good!

I understand most of the words there - just not in that order.

Coincidentally, I tried installing Ubuntu over the weekend. Botted, got the logo thingy, then...

....blackness. Much blackness. It could have been none more black.

I got it to boot properly once, failed to get it to boot properly again, had a look on the forums, found solutions which seemed to involve code and stuff so gave up and am now back with XP.

I think it was something to do with the video card & its drivers.

Also, I stand corrected on Backtrack. Apparently it is now based on Ubuntu. Formerly it was Slack-based, which is the older version I've been using. I now have the latest release

Now that sounds cool. How well are you getting on with it? My version of Xp is the Xp lite version (unofficial) so the iso is only 200mb.smiley - biggrin

never admit to that, the Mac crowd will think you secretly yearn to own a Mac and will evangelise you you to within an inch of your bank account.

Unless you already have one, of course smiley - smiley In which case you're all jolly nice people can-I-leave-the-party-now-please?
