Have you never heard the phrase 'How dare you assume I'm a heterosexual!'?

Yes but some are offended by that. As with anything.

However, it's quite handy to have an assistant regardless if you're examining ladybits or manbits.
Unless you're an octupus of course.
Seriously I expect health care professionals to behave professionally at work. Patients and students are taboo after all.

Hm...
Personally, I have by choice shared a bed (not even just a room) with straight men, gay men, straight women and gay women quite happily. However they have all been people that I trust. Whether or not sex has been involved (often not), or would be involved, if I was uncomfortable with a person, I wouldn't want to be around them while I'm asleep.
In my opinion, you cannot fairly generalise by gender preference any moer than you can by age, race or anything else. It has to be down to who the person is.
Of course, anybody in their right mind wont share a room with me anyway, I snore WAY too loudly!

I used to have a CPN who I always assumed was gay...since pretty much confirmed when I saw him go into a gay bar. (not 100%, mind - I've been in the same bar myself). He's now left and his replacement is a very blokeish bloke. I don't get on with him half so well. But then...I'm a girly boy anyway. I like women better than men and tend to feel uncomfortable in masculine environments.

Not the cows, though... Damn things seem to find tents far too interesting, even with me snoring inside them.
Either that or I was disturbing their sleep too, so they decided to wake me up.

>>I think it's normal to assume that someone is straight until told otherwise<<
Why assume anything though? Most people assume I'm straight just because I'm a long way from any gay stereotype - I don't get offended by it, but I do wonder why it happens. I don't think that much about anyone's sexuality, I don't really care unless I'm interested in them or they're interested in me.
As for doctors, I had a few problems with my man parts as a teenager and I wouldn't let my regular GP examine me but that was because I had a crush on him and he was the dad of a guy I went to school with, so I was pretty terrified my crush might show
At university I used to Scuba dive and before and after practice nudity was pretty much expected. None of the guys knew I was gay and I always felt a little awkward about that.

Years ago at the end of the Soviet era I went on a wonderful journey across land to Moscow. At Budupest station, around midnight, our group got on board the Russian train. The sleeping compartments were all assigned to people, regardless of sex. The group was a bit taken aback at first...but after about half an hour it felt complete normal.
I have been to Russia three times and have come to realise that they are an intensly communal people. Ideas of 'space' and sexual separation that we assume...simply don't occur there.

I have enough problems with finding straight women who find me attractive; I can't see that it'd be any easier for a gay man.

I have a Budapest story too...
When I was there, I found myself sitting next to a public school type in Cafe Gerbaude (*divine* cakes ). We got talking about the various traditional baths. I'd had a not very nice experience at the way-to-touristy Hotel Gellert baths. He'd been to a different one.
'But I discovered it was a gay hangout', he said, disgustedly. 'And someone came on to me. '
'Well,' I said, 'You could always have said No!'
And I also have a classic mixed-sex sleeper compartment story, from the wonderful Chic Murray. (If you don't know Chic - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBeJa1Ym16Y)...
'I used to be an ironing board salesman. I was in 'The Ironing Board Game.' One time, I went down to a trade exhibition in London, and I came across this collapsible, travelling ironing board - really nifty - it folded down into its own case and everything - so I took a sample to take home with me. But when I arrived at Euston for the Glasgow sleeper...och, it was chaos! All the tickets were mixed up and they didn't know what they were doing. So as a result, this lassie ended up in a sleeping compartment with me and four other men. So she took one of the top bunks, and I was on the other - but I made sure I had my travelling ironing board with me, packed up safe in its wee case.
Anyway, over the course of the evening, we got to chatting. We hit it off and became quite friendly, so I said to her,
'Why don't you come over to my bunk and we could have a wee cuddle, hen?'
And she said,
'Och, away! How would I get all the way over there?'
So I said,
'Well I've got something in bed with me that I could stretch on over, and you could just roll across, like.'
And a voice came from one of the lower bunks,
'Aye - but how's she goantae get back?'

Do we? I don't. I do here, but only in conversations where it's relevant. Other than that I don't because by happenstance all my relationships have been with men. Girls have been the occasional icing on the cake.
